"The Renault Clio Trophy has nuked its rivals at the Nürburgring.

And it's faster than the last Focus RS. Two fingers to the paddleshift naysayers...

Renault’s latest Clio Trophy is fast. Really fast. Eight minutes, 23 seconds around the Nürburging fast.

That’s the time that’s just been posted by German magazine Sport Auto, as it compared a bunch of diddly hot hatchbacks. And in doing so, Renaultsport’s 217bhp, 1.6-litre Trophy managed to beat Audi’s four-wheel-drive, 228bhp 2-litre S1 Quattro by nearly 20 seconds…

Ignore the murky issues of variables like weather and driver ability - because that’s no fun - and the Clio’s time is even more startling.

At 8:23, the Clio 220 Trophy is quicker around the Green Hell than the fastest quoted times for the Lotus Exige S, Audi RS4 and - incredibly - the bonkers, 300bhp mk2 Focus RS."

Well then, let's add a few mods to the RS and run the lap again.
Factory car lap time vs modified car lap time arguments are invalid from the get-go.

No doubt, but we need a stock time to compare to the RS here.

PS. I can't find one 'tho, a few Focus ST and RS times but none for a stock Fiesta ST.

That left-front rim is incredibly close to digging into the tar.

Also 8:23 is crazy fast. RenaultSport really know how to put a chassis together. It's really light as well.

No, I say it was an interesting small hot hatch, but the lap times show that the Trophy version is a proper little track car. Looks like it could be a very good bang-for-buck buy.

Are you limiting yourself to just new cars in that category? Because if you aren't then cars like the Alfa Romeo Giulietta QV, Ford Focus ST and VW Golf GTI (Mark 6) come to mind to name but a few.

New of course. The 3 you mention are considerably more expensive than the Clio, while being slower around the Nurburgring. In fact that little clio clocked a faster time than the Golf R :D

Second-hand will always be better value for money. My car is about the best performance bang-for-buck I could find, which is why I bought it. I wanted a car that I would want to drive the most, while costing the least....not that i drive it that much anymore because of the bike ;)
