Hi guys

For some reason I like the look of this car. It has nice styling, has a 1.6L engine and most of the accessories you will need. It almost looks like the Cross Polo, but the price of R149 000 vs R215 000+ for the Cross Polo it does seem like a good option if money is a problem. OK, the engine is not super powerful at 64KW. The other thing I was wondering about is that it is a Renault....how is Renault in general, and are the services expensive?

I can get a demo model with 4 000km on the clock for R139 000. It would be interesting to wait another 6 months to see what the price for a 20 000km to 45 000km one would be second hand.

parts are a bit crazy, or at least were when we had one.

64kw out of a 1.6 these days is a bit meh to be honest :p

new polo vivo trendline 1.4 pushes 63kw and a hyundai i20 1.6 pushes 91kw

But just googled and doesn't look too bad :)

go test drive it and see what you think afterwards.

What features does it come with standard?

i see discs front only, drums at rear

i20 is a better buy but its not "Cross" but wtf is that anyway some dark plastics along the side.
And if the new Accent/Rio hatches come in at the same price as the outgoing ones that would be a very good buy aswell

The Renualt/Dasia Sandero... meh

It will always be a Dacia no matter what they call it, unfortunately. I've always considered anything over 100k for them to be excessive!

The car is looking more and more gay to me now. That is after I saw a Audi A3....LOL.

I was wondering about buying a brand new car, or paying more or less the same for a 5-6 year old proper car whith +/-85 000km to R150 000 km on the clock. I'm just worrying that expensive cars with a bit of milage will bite you on the shin with super expensive services, and expensive parts to replace. What is a lot of mileage for a expensive quality car these days? I don't drive more than 15 000km a year. What are your opinions?

See the two below:

Audi 2.0T FSI....now here is some serious car with 147KW for a good price.....but mileage?

Newer car, almost brand new, diesel, with only 26 000km on the clock. But proper car (not a fan of diesell though)

Very good price but don't really need 186KW - good mileage too.

Or a 156 000km 2003 BMW318i compact for R85 000. I'm not a huge fan of BMW though, but if I have to, I'll go for this shape. http://capetown-westerncape.gumtree...6372;59144100;3100190;5;9077;;;;1316694976596

Don't buy a Sandero, it is c-r-a-p.

get a 6 cyclinder at least if you going bmw :p

If you are going second hand remember to shop around properly, test drive several, make your mind up, if possible get a knowledgeable buddy to check the car out with you.

be careful not to buy someone else's problem.

Is there a reason you are looking for a car that is more rugged that the average hatchbacks? I know the Ford Figo has some pretty good ground clearance and if you are looking for a good car at around R150k then i20/Corsa will give you the best bang for your buck.

fixed :D

True, the i20 does have the best value for money - I could have had a 1.6 i20 with a few more features for the same price I paid for my 1.4 Corsa Essentia. But apart from the i20 nothing tops the Corsa Essentia in terms of bang for your buck.

Unfortunately I cannot say it is the only option if you want a German car because the i20 was developed by Hyundai Europe in Opel's home town Rüsselsheim. No wonder they share some resemblance to each other :p

No don't buy a Sandero! Cheap cheap car. It's not really a Renault. Had the misfortune of getting one as a rental car, I was scared to drive on the highway with it. It feels unstable, it's gear level vibrates the whole time (not something you find in modern cars). It's truly terrible. Had an i20 after it, and that was fine.

Jah, me too. Got a rental from Lanseria to Polokwane & back... what a kak ride. It handles worse than a fully-loaded Defender, and that's saying something

Its just depressing to know that you have to fork out R170k plus for a new car, and then its only just a proper car, but still entry level. How about a proper audi like the ones I posted for less? How much is "high mileage" for a proper car like an audi for example? Bear in mind I drive a 1996 toyota 1.8gle with 278 000km on the clock. It will break down soon, and paying so much for a 1400 or 1600 new car feels depressing. I also drive less than 15000km a year.

Nothing wrong with a "proper" car at that mileage, but then you must realise that you could be in for some really hefty maintenance bills. Just as your Toyota will eventually break, so will they, and they will cost you a fortune in the process.

BUT

There is nothing wrong with this Audi at all!!

Why is a proper car a Audi, BMW, Merc, VW when going secondhand?

Why not something naturally aspirated with no fancy turbo's, intercoolers, injectors etc to go wrong. Maybe jap, cheap parts & reliable. I would rather risk my wallet on a second hand n/a jap car than any turbocharged expensive german car. When its repair time my wallet will thank me.
