Hi guys

We're thinking of getting a Renault Scenic 2009, seeing as out last car was stolen. But a friend had told us not to get it, because you could wait up to 3 months for parts. Does anyone know if this is true? Don't they keep parts in the country? I mean, I see a lot of them on the road, so surely there must be some Renault warehouse in S.A.?

Thanks in advance.

Diesel or petrol? A friend had to replace the diesel injectors, very expensive iirc >R20000 for 4.

If they don't have stock, and they quite often don't, they have to import the parts from France.
From experience, I reckon you can do better by looking elsewhere. Just search for French cars on MyBB and you'll figure out why ;)

hey we had the 2008 model i think or maybe the 2007 and there was indeed a long waiting time for parts when they broke we sold it about a week ago due to this problem as it was getting older and more parts were breaking more often

Stay away! The parts(when you can get them) are more expensive than most other cars.

Don't buy a French car.

Never mind the parts being a problem, they are put together so illogically that they are very expensive to work on so whether you go to a dealer or private mechanic it will cost more to maintain.

And they break down...a lot.

Also take a look around at how many Scenics in particular have wiring problems where all the lights come on when the car brakes, or the reverse lights come on instead of the brake lights etc.

Ouch. Seems we really should stay away. They had a Honda Civic for about the same price (90k), but it was sold already. Any other suggestions? WE originally thought a Honda Jazz, but they are really expensive, even second hand. We thought about the Toyota Versa as well, but we can't find one under 120k.

Honda Jazz is so reliable, that people that own that hardly ever sell. Heard it on the car show on 702 :)
If you looking for smallish car like the Jazz, how about a Kia or Hyundai? Their entry level models are decent for the price.

Dont touch my sister just got rid of hers, that car cost a fortune in services, parts expensive and yes depending whats wrong you can wait for weeks if you not in the city

Its definitely true about importing parts. Mine sat at renault for 4 weeks waiting for suspension related parts.

Brawler they can't - AFAIK they have been losing market share for several years at a rapid pace.

Just to add, mine was a Sandero - manufactured just outside Pretoria and I had to wait 4 weeks for parts from France. Lol

So what would be an equivalent car to the scenic with a more reliable manufacturer? For about 100k?

The reason the scenic is so cheap is because no one wants it once it's out of warranty. You won't get an equivalent price from a reliable manufacturer because they hold their value better.

Scenic new goes for R260K, 4 years later it's worth R100K. That should give you an idea how the after sales service is.
If you only have R100K to spend, my best advice is to get as small as possible car that will still be practical. Like a Picanto.

Now you may scoff at this, but allow me to elaborate. You pay R107K for a brand new Picanto, and for the next 5 years you won't spend a cent extra on that car. Peace of mind. If you buy a nicer second hand car I can almost guarantee you will spend far more in 5 years on things that break. And things do break, unfortunately.

And that Picanto will keep its value well.

If you want to stick to bigger cars Jazz and Corola Verso would be best.
