New Renault Symbioz mid-sized SUV primed for Spring unveiling

The new crossover is understood to be only slightly larger than the Clio-based Captur

Renault has revealed its upcoming, value-focused SUV will be named the Renault Symbioz ahead of its reveal, which is set to take place in the Spring.

Primed to launch as a compact SUV and a potential rival to the Toyota C-HR, the Symbioz will expand the brand’s offering in the larger and more expensive C-segment.

The Symbioz is understood to be only slightly larger than the Clio-based Captur, at around 4410mm long and weighing in at under 1500kg, and will be positioned to fill the gap between that car and the coupé-backed Arkana.

It will likely be based on the same CMF-B architecture as the Captur, and will be offered with an E-Tech full-hybrid powertrain with 143bhp - the same as the engine that drives the current Renault Clio E-Tech hybrid. The use of this advanced drivetrain should ensure increased driving enjoyment and lower fuel consumption.

Its platform should also enable it to offer the same choice of full- and plugin hybrid powertrains while potentially paving the way for a pure-electric derivative further down the line, based on CMF-BEV (now known as Ampr Small).

Renault’s new small SUV will be called ‘Symbioz’

Oh dear, Renault has decided to name its latest crossover after a team on The Apprentice

Renault has announced the name of yet another ‘compact family SUV’ that it will unveil in Spring 2024. Please do try and stay awake at the back.

Anyway, this new crossover will be called the Renault Symbioz. Strange decision to name it after one of the groups that Simon Cowell put together on The X Factor, or a team on The Apprentice, but here we are.

The name Symbioz isn’t actually new to Renault, though. In fact, the brand slapped the name on an electric concept car back in 2017 and then used it again later that year on a further developed, self-driving ‘demo car’.

Despite the fact that seven years have passed since then, this new Symbioz won’t actually be electric or self-driving. Hooray for progress. The 4.41m long crossover will feature an E-Tech full hybrid system with 143bhp. Oh, and Renault handily points out that it will weigh under 1,500kg.

Renault previews new Corolla Cross rival called Symbioz

Renault has found space for yet another SUV in its line-up, and it will go by the name of Symbioz.

Teased this week ahead of its reveal in the third quarter of 2024, the Symbioz will slot between the Captur and the more upmarket Austral.

With an overall length of 4.41 metres, the new French crossover will be similar in size to the Nissan Qashqai, and slightly smaller than Toyota’s Corolla Cross.

Its interior was designed for family life, offering “generous amounts of space and loading capacity”, in Renault’s words.

It will be powered by Renault’s 108kW hybrid powertrain that pairs a 1.6-litre normally aspirated petrol engine with an electric motor.

Although the most budget-friendly of the French firm’s C-segment SUVs, the Symbioz will be offered with some high-end features, including the new-generation solarbay panoramic glass roof, which turns opaque at the touch of a button.

And the name?

Renault says it was inspired by the French word “symbiose”, derived from the ancient Greek “symbiosis”, meaning “living together”.

Yawn, the Renault Symbioz is a new hybrid crossover

Renault’s latest family car will go up against things like the Kia Sportage, Nissan Qashqai and Volkswagen Tiguan

The new Renault Symbioz is an exceptionally boring car. Heck, we do want you to read the rest of this news story, but we value your time too much not to warn you upfront.

The Symbioz name comes from the French word ‘symbiose’, which itself is derived from the ancient Greek ‘symbiosis’. And yes, you’d be right in thinking that means Renault is pitching its latest crossover as “a car for families looking for space and efficiency”.

Slotting between the Captur and the Austral in Renault’s crossover SUV lineup, the Symbioz apparently showcases Renault’s new design language with sharp lines, a large rear end and “a piercing gaze” created by tapering headlights. It’ll be a rival for massively mainstream cars like the Kia Sportage, Nissan Qashqai and Volkswagen Tiguan.

There will just be one powertrain from launch – the E-Tech hybrid 145 will pair a 48bhp electric motor with a 94bhp 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and a 1.2kWh battery. As with all of Renault’s E-Tech series-parallel hybrid setups there will also be a second electric motor that acts as high-voltage starter generator, as well as a clutchless dog 'box with four gears for the petrol engine and two for the main electric motor. The result is a claimed WLTP figure of over 60mpg and a kerbweight of under 1,500kg.

New Renault Symbioz is family-focused hybrid SUV for £30k

Renault's eighth SUV is a "rational" Nissan Qashqai rival with hybrid power and sliding seats

The new Renault Symbioz completes the expansion of the brand’s line-up in the crucial SUV C-segment and is designed to evoke the spirit of the 1960s 16 saloon and the 1980s Espace by focusing on practicality.

The new hybrid will sit between the smaller Captur – alongside which it was developed – and larger Austral in the French firm’s combustion-engined car line-up, making it a direct rival to the Nissan Qashqai.

It’s purposefully practical in design terms, in contrast with Renault’s electric cars. And while the French firm has revived classic names such as the Megane, 5, 4 and Twingo for future EVs, the Symbioz name is new to the range. It has only previously been used on a 2017 electric concept that was focused on autonomous driving.

Paula Fabregat, Renault’s small car design chief, called the Symbioz as “more rational and less emotional” than the firm's new EVs, adding: “The 5 [supermini] is an amazing object; this is an amazing answer.”

She added the focus to develop a car that was "a very good answer for a lot of families" helped determine the boxy shape of the Symbioz, although she added that it was "a sexy box".

Renault Symbioz

Symbioz joins a proud line of family 'voitures à vivre', almost 60 years after the launch of Renault 16, with its modern, spacious and functional design, and 40 years after the revolutionary Espace, an adaptable vehicle just 4.25m long but able to carry seven people. Symbioz is a versatile vehicle that incorporates the best technologies from Renault's C segment, offering compactness and spaciousness to meet the needs of everyone.

An interior continuing the heritage of Renault 'voitures à vivre'

A true 'voiture à vivre', Renault 16 was designed to stand apart from the competition. Launched in 1965, it premiered a new body style, with hatchback access to the boot. More versatile than any of its contemporaries, Renault 16 included a bench seat adjustable for a 'holiday travel' position. It met the needs of families looking for a car that suited their lifestyles, while keeping pace with rapid social change.

Since then, Renault has continued to innovate with family cars that caught the mood of their times. This was true in the 1980s with Espace, a car that started a revolution with its groundbreaking onebox design and modular layout. In the 1990s, Renault did it again with Scénic, the first compact MPV. Designed to resemble a cocoon, Scénic featured an interior dedicated to passenger well-being.

Symbioz shares this same DNA. Able to adapt its boot and passenger compartment to family needs, with useful technologies delivering human added value and compact dimensions that are also ideal for city driving, it joins a long line of versatile 'voitures à vivre', reflecting its times. Showcasing Renault's new design language, Symbioz follows on from the recent Scénic E-Tech electric and New Captur.
