Alright so I am now living in Germany now for 3 months and my SA drivers licence will be expiring this January, does anyone know if I can renew it here at an embassy or something? I know I am able to convert an SA drivers licence into a German one, but I don't want to do it just yet as I am not registerd in the country yet, cause I am saving for a car so the not having to pay tax at the moment helps me alot.

WHAT?!

Germany accepts South African drivers' licences for conversion?!

Damnit, I moved to the wrong country

Only a registered DLTC in SA will be able to renew it. You won't have any problems renewing it once you are back in the country, but I doubt the German authorities will convert it once it has expired.

My wife's SA licence expired while she was in UK. She was able to get her mum to renew it for her. It was quite a mission. Affidavits and all. That was 5 years ago though. Maybe things have changed.

I have nfi how that was done but considering the applicant has to undergo an eye test/fingerprinting etc I cannot see a way around it.

Fingerprints are verified as well so yeah... not sure how that was done. There is certainly no provision for it in the Act.
