Yeesh, just looked at my driver's and it expires on Thursday! It's been 5 years since I last renewed my license and can't for the life of me recall what I did last time. Is it just a matter of going past the traffic dept, or do I need to make a booking or something?

I think you go to the department, fill out some forms and get an eye test? I've never done it though so i'm probably wrong. :/

Yeah don't stress, you have a 21 day grace period until after it expires.

Just stop by, fill in the form, do the eye test, pay and collect it whenever they tell you that it should be ready.

4x black & white photos and take about R200 with you + your ID & current drivers license.

You'll fill in a yellow form and stand in the eye-test queue. Don't bother going to specsavers to do your eyetest, because the exact same person who takes your finger prints and fills out your form has the eye-test machine on their desk.

I went on the day my license expired with colour photos and was sent back. Went back a day later and I had to pay penalties for an expired license. :/

Did mine last year, much easier then the first time. Went in with 4 photos, filled in the form, had eye test, they took a digital photo. Stapled the photos I gave them to the form. They don't actually use the ones you give them anymore.

What were the penalties?

The grace period = time you're allowed to drive under the expired license.
Penalties = 1st day after license is expired you pay in an additional fee of X amount (I think it was R80-R100 or something) to renew it.
