Been carless for a while and decided to check if my drivers is still valid and it expired December 2014, is this likely to cause any difficulties when renewing?

Additionally where in Cape Town is the most efficient in terms of renewing Licence.

Thanks in advance,

Goodwood is a good option as well. For car License Disc renewals nothing beats Pinelands. Every yr is 5mins in & out.

The fact that it is expired shouldn't be an issue.

Just take extra rands along to get a temporary license.

It happens - it's really not an issue. I only discovered that mine expired via a traffic officer who had stopped me. He urged me to renew it and get a temporary licence. Then he said something important... Insurance companies can refuse to pay-out in case of an accident if your licence is long expired. My suggestion is, get it done today... yesterday!

In the western cape the Gordon's Bay depot is the most efficient the last time I had my eye on the stats. But that ain't in Cape Town. Look for one that is open on Saturdays/go early/just before they close.

Nope.

Shoo thanks guys, was getting nervous they might try to "revoke" a drivers licence after x amount of time without renewal. At least it'll be 5 years until I have to do whatever crap test they're trying to get passed when renewing drivers.

Nope.

It made sense what he said because Insurance conditions stipulate possession of a valid driving licence... An expired one is invalid... There could be a grace period, but surely it's not longer than a month...

You have a valid driving license, it is your proof of that fact that has expired, that is all. The short-term ombudsman set this precedent waaay back when. The insurance would have to show that you having an expired proof affected the claim at hand.

Caveat: The previous format ID-book-type drivers licenses are NOT valid and insurance companies may refuse to pay out in these cases.

I am curios, why will the ID book licenses not be valid? Because of different coding being used?

Government proposing a change to the legislation requiring that all drivers take a practical test when renewing their license as well (in the news today). Better get mine renewed before that happens :/

One would hope that drivers were cognisant of the rules of the road, and should therefore not be worried about a practical test.
I do one every few years here in China, its no big deal.

Re-certifying that drivers know the road rules, and know how to drive safely is a good thing imho.
Stops the 70 year old grannies that drive into other peoples cars* from getting licences at some point.

*Yes, this has happened to a car I owned.

Milnerton was good when I renewed my last year too. Place was basically empty, took me a few minutes to finish everything. Card arrived as scheduled too.
