i recently updated my avast anti-virus, last update was over 2months ago - bad i know *sheepish grin*

now eachtime i start up my pc, avast gives me a warning about a file, a.bat.

i can choose to move it to the chest, delete whatever, but whichever program recreates the file when i restart.

so how do i find out which program loads this file ,or better yet, how can i tell the a/v to ingore the file?

Goto www.sysinternals.com
Download a program from there called autoruns.
It lists all the programs that are automatically run, and from where, and allows you to "disable" the feature, so you can re-enable it again, or delete the entry.
Sysinternals was bought by Microsoft, so don't worry, it's good clean software.

autoruns is a fine piece of software. If you find it and delete it from autoruns and it keeps coming back, then you have a trojan in memory that keeps adding it back.

- run msconfig and disable that rogue app or whatever it is
- go into registry and remove "a.bat"

thx for all the help above, will try it all over the w'end....

...*hands all a drink of their choice* (virtual ofcourse...lol)

You should also download HiJackThis, it clears alot of mess left from trojans. Be carefull tho, select specific things you want removed or you could crash the system.

I've been using it for years, it works quite well

i d/l the autoruns prog, it tells me 4 programs run on start same ones that jv powertools showed me, so i guess its one of them....

....now i reckon i have to disable one, then restart etc to find out which one loads tha a.bat file
