Repair or ipconfig release / renew?

Just wondering - when troubleshooting, I often find myself clicking on the "repair" button of a connection, as well as opening a command window and doing ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew. Am I just doing the same thing in different ways? The command prompt method usually impresses the client more...

It's not the same.

Command prompt is quicker - start, run, cmd, ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew

whilst using the repair button takes a few clicks - but this flushes the DNS cache as well.

to do same in command line you should use ipconfig /flushdns and then ipconfig /registerdns

Whatever turns you on, or is more impressive, should be used :D

I prefer the command-line method of renewing the IP first, and if that doesn't help, then the repair button.

I agree with uncle Libs. Also some repairs, like Vista's Diagnose feature allow you to reset the connection, which basically restarts the adapter.

The comman prompt usage as mentioned only refreshes the adapter's IP, this means that it could sort out the problem, but sometimes a repair is necessary.
