Hey guys,

I need some advice on a dishwasher problem. I bought my Defy dishwasher second hand from my old landlady. She had had it for a few years before me. It is an entry level model.

Anyway, I've had it for the past 2 years or so, and I use it often. Like nearly daily. And as I said, it was a few years old before that, so its probably 5-10 years old.

Recently it has started giving trouble. No leaks (yet), but it does the following:
Sometimes it gets stuck an infinite loop and will run the whole night unless I manually move the dial forward
Or, I turn it on and notice that, at the end, the dishes aren't really clean. I can still see the dishwasher tablet in the dishwasher. It is only missing that red dot.

I haven't really done any maintenance to it over the last 2 years since I've owned it, but I have made sure to always rinse plates off before I put them in, so that no large food pieces go into the dishwasher.

Do you guys think it would be economical to repair? If I had it repaired, do you think I could get another 2 years out of it?

Best bet would be to get a repair person to come out and have a look at it.

Where are you based?

The timers and switches are the most expensive component and although the dishwasher should last 10to20yrs it's probably going to be better to buy a new one which is A efficiency imo.
The cost to repair including call out etc is going to be 60to70% of a new one.
If you have a decent assist programme on your household insurance they could possibly cover a fair amount of the cost.

Household contents insurance or household structural insurance? Never heard of such a program.

I was going to use my eBucks to buy a new one in early April. Of course I wanted to use them to buy a 4K TV later this year, but that might have to wait.

EDIT:

Looking at some guides on the Internet, it seems that dishwashers can be expected to last around 9 years maximum.

We moved into that old house in January 2012, and the dishwasher was not new then. So, it is a minimum of 4 years old, but I don't know how old it is because I don't know how long the landlady had it before I moved in.

Replace it ;-)

Otherwise have a go and see if you can find a replacement part and repair yourself. I used these guys when I replaced a gasket on my LG dishwasher which was leaking: [email protected]
