from a few days ago, i have been recieving repeat emails. mostly doubles but one five times (the biggest one - 9Megs) . I phoned the help desk last night and was told that it is probably because MY computer is timimg out. granted i dont have an antivirus. (coming soon). so i checked my email account on webmail.iburst.co.za and there want anything last night. this morning i get TWO more emails (exact same as the three i got last night), now i KNOW it cant be my pc, because this morning it said 3 messages to dl, two of which where the same as the three from last night.

OH - and DL their pc suite (R12/month for updated antivirus) is coming in at 35KB/sec. (what does 1Mbps equate to?) and i have a directional antenae that has LINE OF SIGHT to the tower, less then 2km away.

any ideas?

you must remember that iBurst is capable of 1mbs, if you are the only one connected to the tower !!! do the math. if you got 1000 people connected simultaneously to the same tower, which can handle only X bandwitdh that it can supply. X / 1000 = less than 1mbs.

according to suxcasa, they only need to prove that they can deliver the 1mbs, not continueosly supply to all users. hence customer = screwed. (probably why they say "burst" in iBurst, cause when people slow or log off, u can burst up in speed - for like 5 seconds!!)

could be the pop server fcking out aswell...having the same issue at one of my sites, were the email server is offsite, try pinging it and you will probably find the a mixed bag of of successfull and failed pings.
And the more technical explenation as to the the duplication whould be that your computer fails to send the confirmation tickets saying "hey bru got ya mails", so the email server is obvlivious to the fact that you actually already successfully downloaded the mail. The connection issue could be on either your side or at the location of the server, but will most probably be at your place, but to confirm if thats the issue ping a couple of random sites, if you get time-outs to other sites prepare to climb on the phone to phone telkom...

Granted you don't have anti virus? That is like saying...
My windows are dirty. Granted some random dude in Alaska does not have carpets in his home. Totally unrelated. Unless you had Norton. Then all bets were out the door.

But I fail to see why you feel the need to pay for an anti-virus? You get loads of free alternatives. Same with email. You have gmail/ymail/coldmail/livemail etcetc. All for free and even boasting some nice anti-spam/virus filters to boot!

Only 35KB/s? I get more than that on my 384k adsl line. 35 * 8 = 280kbps.

Your connection is not stable enough to tell the sending POP (mail) server that you have received the emails.

For now, you can try to use a product that lets you see the mail "header" and delete the ones that you already have downloaded so that they don't re-download and re-fail.

I googled, and found this: http://www.pablosoftwaresolutions.com/html/pop3_preview.html

That's the kind of thing that you need for now until your connection is sorted.

EDIT: Basically, close your email client, then use the Email preview software to delete the emails that you already have, then re-open your email client so that it can get the remaining e-mail.

outlook and thunderbird support downloading of headers only...no need for special software

if i click on send/recieve, and it says: recieving 1 of three, 2 of three, 3 of three, and two are the same, HOW ON EARTH can that be my conection or my time outs? am i missing something, especially when i checked last night (after the same one DL three times) on iburst's site for the emails (empty).

the helpdesk mentioned virus, so i mention it :) , besides, i heard someone say that their ISP server had a virsus that was sending multiple emails.
If you pay for a service you have the right to complain when it doesnt work.

Nope, not missing something. If you empty the inbox on their side, it is not a problem on your side if you get the same email more than one time. It is an outside problem probably. Next time check the dates on these emails. Dates in the headers should differ from each other. Probably an SMTP server stuck or someone just sending the things over and over? Unless iBust filters the emails before sending them to your inbox? Might be their in-line filter acting up, but then the headers will show this as they will basically be identical to each other. Dunno.

iBust is just being stupid imo. An ISP virus ain't your problem in any case. Does not mean you need to have anti-virus at all.

Re: Paid vs FREE services ... some free services have better uptimes&service than the paid ones :p

the recieved date stamps on the emails are for the day they where downloaded into my inbox. IE - two have todays date, three have yesterday's date, and they all have yesterday as the sent date

i got a call from their help desk - woooohoooo, well done iburst.

i have copied and pasted the details of the email (right click, details tab) and sent that from the first and third email, from which they tell me that they should be able to see how it got sent multiple times.

And their test mail from me (them) to me also came in twice :o

Hi all.

I will check to see if there are multiple reports on this and if we do have an issue.

Thank you

Cheers
