I've been getting repeated attempts to guess a username and password on my mailserver at home from ip addresses like 165.145.123.89. Is there any way to trace them, they look similar to my adsl IP from Telkom.

thanks

so it's from a telkom internet subscriber? can i report this user?

spoke to saix support, i need to tell the cops about this, after which saix will be able to tell me from which isp it came. anyone know a quicker way to find out who the isp was? it could be any on the saix network according to saix.

This may sound really stupid, but just get a decent firewall and don't worry about it. Hackers are hackers and this guy's a n00b. Don't make too much work for yourself.

Or perhaps it was not a hacker at all, but someone else who runs a pop server on an adsl line, and got capped, resulting in their dynamic dns not getting updates and you getting the requests meant for their box?

and btw hes not doing anything illegal, why cant he go to that ip?

Well - if you stand there - and constantly try defeat security on my garden gate - then that is intent to commit a crime - unacceptable and probably illegal.
