Hey folks.

I'm probably going to be replacing my notebook hard drive soon, (it's starting to show damage) and I'm keen for a 7200 rpm drive. Has anyone had experience with how much hotter they are?

My current one is a Samsung MP0804H (80GB) 5400 RPM and this thing is sitting at 60 freakin' degrees C yo!

I'm busy googling to see if I can find out if this drive is just a hot rod or perhaps my notebook has bad cooling.

Given the choice (and I was :)) I'd prefer the larger capacity available with the 5400's over the higher spindle speed.

Jah, tho my current 80gb has 50gb free, I use it for work and the only real 'luxury' I keep on my notebook is music and Quake 3 (just incase!)

Erm, yeah, has anybody got anything to say regards to how much hotter 7200's run?

Just bought a 160gb Seagate notebook drive. Nice little drive, lots of space, 5 year warranty. At 5 years it will probably outlast the life of some notebooks!

Is that the one described here that is supposed to run at 5400 but has been retarded to 4200 to reduce power consumption? http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/82247/seagate-ships-160gb-notebook-drive.html

So what is it that you do that makes you want the extra spindle speed? I've done some pretty heavy video work on my 5400 without suffering at all.

Damn did not realise that. How do I check on this? I am using the drive in an external enclosure for now so cant really care for the power consumption issue. The enclosure shipped with dual usb leads, one extra for power.

Not sure - perhaps you can check the specs on seagates site? what model is it?

You shouldnt need that extra power cable. Usually they only put it in if the bus power from the computer isnt enough to power the drive.

I have the one that they mention at PC PRO. The 160 Gb 5400.3 8 mb cache, IDE drive. Bought it to move all my media stuff off the machine.

Also for my Grabit downloads, as the notebook drive was working hard when files were coming down at 400kbs, music was playing, some video encoding was happening, and I was trying to do work at the same time. Now the external drive works some and the internal drive just works less. Kind of like dual core processors but just dual HDD with the two processors watching and controlling. Dont know how scientific all of this is but it works for me.
