Thought it was just my battery, replaced the battery and the thing still doesnt work.Dealership quoted me R2100 for a new programmed key.:wtf:

Any ideas? My last idea was to source a key off ebay and program it myself.

Google SA has no results for spare car keys lol

Prius 2006 - not a smart key, has 2 buttons on it to lock and unlock doors, and the small emergency key on the side that im using now to get in and out.

you can get the key and then ask the dealer to program it. Just make sure to take all your keys with...

Check your local salvage yards if the remotes are reprogrammable, we have quite often had keys for a completely demolished vehicle.

Since you can just swap over the inserts you should be fine

Normally only the dealerships can code keys, for security reasons.

I have done that and it works. However you need to open your current key and make sure the one you are buying is the exact same board. Obviously you need to keep the transponder chip that is in your key. So in essence you are only replacing the circuit board. If you search around you might find a guide on how to synchronise your key without going to the dealer.

There is normally some procedure to follow that allows you to sync your key with the car. In my case it was put the key in the ignition and turn the key so the ignition is on (lights on the dash light up) don't start the car. With all doors closed and unlocked press the unlock and lock buttons while the ignition is on. Pressing the buttons the doors will lock, unlock and lock again. Done.

Please note this is only to sync the remote to the car. It does nothing with the transponder in the key, they are usually RFID and you need a dealer to sort those out.

Can you elaborate?

Normally there's some kind of challenge/response authentication between the car's ECU and the mothership (manufacturer) to allow the adding of a transponder to the ECU's allow list... (What Roux is talking about above).
Agreed there's ways to get the remote working on most brands but you won't be able to get past the immobiliser like that.

Isn't that why those ECU cables have become such a "must buy" ?

Know Toyota and BMW you can code your own stuff if you know how or willing to learn.

The cable won't help you. You don't have the software/keys/passwords etc necessary to tell the ECU to learn the code.

if you have a snippy WinXP laptop I'll come assist :)

EDIT : I am very wrong, kind of. You need a key that you can buy off the web if you have your VIN number and a code generated by the ECU. Then you can programme the key.
You don't need the above usually if it's a brand new key.

No, your car's immobiliser needs to be told to accept the transponder in the key...

Cable + Software = Success.
That is what I am saying.

I've coded a new smart key to my car. With just a laptop, some patience and the cable.
Both keys work as they should.

Just paid Toyota R14k for a new set of locks and keys for a 2011 Corolla. (Car was stolen and recovered).

And that doesn't even include a remote.

R2100 for a programmed key with remote is cheap.
