So, being the all-things-manual kinda guy I am, I went and got the Canon EF-S focusing screen for my camera. I'm a bit disappointed.

The standard (EF-A) is described as "The standard focus screen for the EOS 40D Standard Precision Matte surface." I cannot see any matte surface on it. It looks completely clear.

The EF-S is described as "Exclusively for the EOS 40D, this focus screen is optimized for wide-aperture lenses from f/1.8 thru 2.8. Areas that are slightly out of focus appear more out of focus, making it easier to tell when focus is right-on. It is ideal for users who frequently manually focus in dim light with fast lenses."

I can't say I've noticed that either, but I'll have to play with it some more. What I have noticed, but only in good light, is that it has a very fine, honeycomb-like texture. But no split/prism! I see it is available for the 1/1D cameras, I wonder if it will fit? Since the Katz Eye ones apparently affect metering I'm not sure I want that (just yet).

User replaceable focusing screens are a nice touch - mine got ruined within a month of having my 400D thanks to a wet Q-Tip (I love my kids but there are times . . . )
