So yesterday i went into an electrical shop, as i want to buy some small bulk heads to place around the garden perimeter for security, and i ask the saleguy if i can replace the standard blobe inside with an LED globe for energy saving. He says no, i would need an LED compatible Bulk head. So i said, the LED globe and normal globe are the same fitting, but he insisted i couldnt. Was this just sales talk or fact? I know you have the LED floodlight etc, but i am wondering how do i convert my home standard lights or energy saving lights to LED globes then?

Are you referring to downlighters? You can replace those as long as they use the same socket (GU5 or GU10/12), as the sockets differentiate between 12 and 220V.

He's probably referring to the physical size of the LED globe, only the lowest wattage energy saver globes (shortest in length) fit into my bulkhead fixtures and then only after a bit of modification to the base.

Is it a bulkhead similar to this?

Then he is talking k4k, any edison screw light (within the correct physical dimensions for the housing) should fit.

EDIT: with those types of people I always go back and show them its possible...

Mix of misinformation and lack of understanding.
As long as the screw (or Bayonet depending) of the LED is the same as your current bulbs it will work (that's the whole point they made them fit current standards just use less electricity) - the problem may come in where the globe of the LED might be too big and the cover of your bulkhead wont fit.

Yup, thats the exterior bulkhead.

You get 2 size bulk heads. The small one and a large one. The LED globe could be too big for the small bulkhead, but should fit the large.

I knew he was talking k@k, but wasn't sure enough to take him on. Couldn't understand why an LED replacement globe would not work with the same rear fitting (bayonet or screw). Ok, just to be an irrit, i will go back and tell them they losing business as a result. But then again, they could be throwing me off as they then offered me a very overpriced LED floodlight as replacement.

I just finished replacing the CFL's on 27 of those damn bulkheads. There is a seller on bidorbuy that has a very decent E27 Cob light. Chip-on-board and with the diode's arranged like corn-on-a-cob.
R65 for a 3.5W and R85 for a 5W (Same dimensions), warm white and cool white.
Here's a shot I took before closing one bulkhead.
Total consumption of all the outside bulkheads - I used a mix of 3.5W and 5W for certain areas - is now 95W.

On the bulk head issue. Is there not a cheaper alternative? A bulk head on special comes in at R50, but normal price is around R75. I would need 24 to 30 of these fittings, ex the globes, of which LED would be best, but CFL would have to do for now. Thats 2K minimum. ouch. The LED floodlights wont be any cheaper, and then there is no ambience. I see you get those cheap glass water tight lights (looks like an empty coffee bottle), they go for around R25 each, but not sure how to mount them to make them look better, cant mount it rear flush, or the wall will look like it has numerous clear nipples.

Try going directly to Radiant they in wynberg IIRC they have an end of range sale going on now,

Whatever you do - don't buy from Lighting Warehouse. They stock the Flash range, and the lights are expensive and really badly designed. Radiant is the best option. Sadly whatever you go - its going to cost you around 2K for a area that needs 24 bulkheads.
You could go for the bigger models, but then they cost more and need two bulbs.
You also get plastic bulkheads, but the wonderfull UV levels up here eat them up like candy.

Where can you get them for R75? Builders Warehouse seems to want ~R115 and I need 5.

Cool, ordering 3 of the lights from the guy on BidOrBuy, still cheap.
