Replacing Macbook optical drive with HDD

Awesome, so wife collected the caddy from Rocket-boy, hopefully it works come Tuesday morning and no more space issues.
I have a 1Tb and 750gb 2.5 hdd to fill the void and all for measly R100.

Not sure if it's worth setting up a spinning platter fusion drive - apart from the convenience of having a single logical drive to make backups easier. Fusion drives are great when you have a single platter drive and a SSD as it offloads things you don't use as often to the hdd.

Might keep them separate for now, I have another 120gb ssd not in use at the moment, we'll see how i go for space.

Up and running, added my 500gb sata from original setup.

There screw holes on the plastic enclosure where a little off so had to use soldiering iron to melt the hole's so screws would fit snug.

The components and cables in there are a tight fit, was tricky with my gorilla hands.

www.ifixit.com is an awesome tutorial site.

Thinking of going the FusionDrive route..................itll make my backups easier as well.

Went the Fusion drive route, didnt have any issues.

So far so good.

Nice seeing 503GB free

Loving the free space, only complaint is Mac not as fast on bootup as it used to be.

I assume over time OS X will learn to keep the most used items on the SSD?

By not as fast what do you mean? From chime to login screen I get sub 10 seconds which is still pretty fast, esp considering I only restart a couple times a month.

What guide did you use? Were the steps similar to http://blog.macsales.com/17624-os-x...tup-option-for-non-fusion-drive-equipped-macs ?

Yip same as that process i url.
Before when I booted the apple logo would appear right away, desktop about 6s later.
Now When I press power button screen goes white for 7 seconds then apple logo appears with progress bar and 7 seconds later desktop.

Check you've selected the new fusion drive in system pref > Startup disk. Sometimes if you haven't it spends time searching for the old one.

What is set as your Startup Disk in system preferences?

Edit: Mod beat me to it...

I only see a single drive there?

And have you selected it? It will say "You have selected Osx…" below the drive icon.

EDIT - even if you have just try selecting it again and clicking on the restart button.

I'll be damned it works!!

Thanks guys I must of missed a step, didn't realize you needed to go back and select startup disk, just assumed it did it itself.

Shot.

Back to 7sec to desktop from cold boot.
I've missed the same step before after installing a new drive. Almost drove me mad :)
