Hi there,

I want to get rid of my telkom phone lines and install VOIP.

I have been tol that if I get a box, install linux & for about R400 per month this solution can become a reality in our office.

Is this a reasonable fee above? I am a bit clueless and would appreciate it if someone could steer me in the right direction. :)

There are a host of companies starting up now that offer this and other related services. As always it is in your best interests to shop around and compare.

http://www.voxtelecom.co.za/ is just one such company.

Google a bit.

The company I work for use MITEL IP phones and the tech is visibly affecting productivity for the better.

Cheers

Unfortunately it is not so simple. Most of the companies in South Africa are not on VoIP and until that happens, calls will still have to break out to the PSTN (Telkom). The big savings at the moment are international calls.
You also have to take into account that a leased line to carry the VoIP traffic is not cheap in SA.

I am afraid, you still need to keep the telkom line for the local phone calls, it is still cheaper. As for domestic phone call or international phone calls, you could try VoIP, it will save you up to 30% to 90% telephony cost. For the VoIP call rate, please check www.skypenow.net/Rate.asp, as for the VoIP hardware, you could start with an USB Adaptor. Available for sell at www.digitalplanet.co.za

Yeah,

it's true, the most effective VoIP solution is a Asterisk PBX over ADSL / Diginet. You still need Telkom lines,as local calls with breakout onto the PSTN. You also need a phoneline for the ADSL :(.
