So we had a bumper bashing in my wife's atos yesterday morning on the N1. Outsurance wants to write off, as the repair value of 24,500 is too great for them, and we'll then get about 40,000 retail value back. Other option is we get 16 odd thousand and have to fix it ourselves.

So my thinking is I might as well upgrade her a bit, and was looking at something like this i20

We're currently in the midst of buying a new house as well, so I don't want to go much higher than that.

Anyone here know of any viable alternatives in that size/price bracket?

Thanks

How can a bumper bashing result in R24500 in repair costs?

We hit the back of a mercedes with a towbar, which took the aircon condenser and radiator with it as well. All the panels in front would be getting replaced and painted and and...

Polo Vivo is a great little run around, has less extras, but you can probably end up speding a little less.

Would have helped if the lady in the mercedes didn't fill the gap I’d left just as traffic came to a screeching halt.

That i20 looks like a good option to me. For around R100k you'll be looking at the likes of the ford figos, polo vivos, etc. So that i20 imo, would be a better car.

I feel for you,

had something similar happen to me before, with a Hyundai accent and a "genius in a deathtrap"

best bet is maybe look at totaling the car, take the 40 odd thousand and buying a picanto (old model)
its almost the exact same car as the atoz, shares similar parts, and you can probably pick one up for around the 45-65K bracket.

Good call, the Kia is a quality car.

:wtf:

The real damage is probably closer to the R16k they offered. Insurers use assessors to evaluate the damage. These guys seem to inflate the cost. I assume it is both to protect themselves against comebacks about excessive real costs and because they are not giving you a competitive quote.

What you can do is get quotes from three reputable panelbeaters to repair the car. If it is slightly more than the R16k, they might pay for it. It is worth it for you and Outsurance if the total value of the repaired vehicle is more than the scrap value + repairs.

A colleague had his vehicle repaired on this basis and Outsurance was happy to ensure it again afterwards.

Almost 100K for a 5 year old 1.4!. No way
That car is out of warranty also

You will struggle to get a car in warranty for R100k.

i10 or Picanto will be your best bet if its a warranty you want, but I would probably rather just get the i20. I don't think they will be expensive to run and maintain.
