EXTRAVAGANT EXPENDITURES: SHEER CURTAINS AND VACUUM CLEANER TRAINING​

Professor Themba Mosia was appointed to investigate issues at UNISA in September 2022. According to City Press, the department was especially concerned about allegations regarding the deterioration of governance, executive management and administration of student issues.

The report highlighted these issues, but it also mentioned that the university had spent an exorbitant amount of money on Professor Puleng LenkaBula, who was appointed Vice-Chancellor in January 2021.

According to a report, R8000 was spent on vacuum cleaner training. Never mind the ridiculous price, the Vice-Chancellor’s official residence in Cloghereen, Pretoria, is mostly covered by tiles and wooden floors – only the stairs are carpeted.


Sheer curtains were purchased for the home at a staggering price of R285 228,60. The report found that it was an overpayment and there was nothing special about the curtains.

“The university paid R285 228 for the procurement of curtains. I was surprised to find sheer curtains,” remarked Mosia in the report, per TimesLive.

LenkaBula has not moved into the official residence for more than two years after her appointment. When asked about this during the investigation, she said the University council had promised to equip the home with a security system to protect her and her family as her life was threatened.


In the report, Mosia remarked that it was puzzling that the council has taken so long to ensure that the house’s security is up to scratch.
