I put accident in quotes, because the car that drove into (the back of) me must have been doing <5km/h and there appears to be so little damage it's not even worth attending to.

Does this still need to be reported to the police? The other car is a jalopy with plenty of existing damage and they aren't going to claim.

I'd still report it, cause when you least expect it that guy will come with some sob story about how you reversed into him and how he wants his whole car fixed...

I know the person and they admitted fault in a text message. Bit of a jobsworth - just worried they'll go report even though I told them not to worry about it and I don't want to claim due to the hassle.

I would still report it. If the other party reports it with a false statement of what happend you are in the wrong. If your insurance find out you were in a unreported accident they may refute future claims.
You don't have to claim just report it to the police and insurance.

If you report to police and other person then wants to claim from you in a week... You have a case number you can keep as referance

If it was me I'd just ignore the whole issue. If it becomes something because of the other party, I would just deny even knowing of the "so called accident"

Report it to the SAPS and your insurer. Too often the "Don't worry about it" from the driver at fault comes back to bite you a week later, especially once the SO sees and hears about the "minor" damage!!!
