Hi all,

I just went to a dentist out here on the West Rand and I just think I got scammed. Got charged like R500+ and spent a total of 5 minutes in the chair and said everythings fine. I went to another dentist before and he found a couple things. Is there anywhere I can list a k a k dentist, so other people can be warned?

I'm on the East Rand. In December I went to the dentist for a checkup. I hadn't been in years - always made some excuse that I was busy studying and working. I sat in the chair and I had a proper clean and polish. Afterwards I went out back to the receptionist to pay. I thought I was done, but apparently not - I had to go see the dentist. Having had just had my teeth cleaned and polished I thought I had just seen the dentist, but it was actually the dental/oral hygienist who did the job.

The dentist then checked me for less than 5 minutes as well, with x-rays included and said everything was fine. Was charged R450. So my dentist no longer does the job of cleaning and polishing of teeth, rather she employs an oral hygienist to this job and she concentrates on the nitty-gritty (a dentist is a doctor and it's their job to diagnose oral/mouth diseases and manage appropriately, among other things).

So I would advise you to go back to that dentist and ask what the breakdown of the visit is - how much money goes for x-rays, payment to the oral hygienist for cleaning your teeth, etc.

:) Yeah it depends on a lot of things, but if it was just for a consult then that seems a bit high.

On the other hand you could consider that nothing was wrong in your mouth in the first place and the original dentist was just finding fault for the sake of it...? It completely depends what the "original problems' that the first dentist found were.
