I'd like to report meter tampering in George, but I don't know who to contact.

I call Eskom's reporting number: 0800 11 27 22.

They tell me they only take reports if it concerns Eskom supplied electricity, and not when it's municipal supplied electricity.

I call a general Eskom number: 086 003 7566 on their Operation Khanyisa page (http://www.operationkhanyisa.co.za). They tell me that indeed, the 0800 number is used for all reports of elctricity theft.

A back and forth ensues.

I've lodged a report in any case, while the call-'agent' felt skeptical that anything might happen.

Any ideas, advice?

(Also, the situation involves a family drama: slack, arsehole, bully brother living for free in my mother's house. We're soon to lodge an eviction order against him. Any advice on that?)

Am I understanding this right? You are reporting your own brother ! ? ! On another note, judging by the huge number of posts you've done in this forum in such a short time, is it safe to assume you've been here before?

Yes, I am.

I am an old forum member, but now using a new nick.

Is this pre-paid meter or one of the old Eskom meters? Pre-paid you contact your local municipality. Actually with the old meters you do the same. Eskom sells electricity to local municipalities who sell it on.

Re. your brother: if he has a rental agrremeent and is not paying, then you can evict him. If he is just "squatting" there...call the cops and tell them he is trespassing and they must remove him.

Thanks MightyQuinn.

The story is complicated because I am in Cape Town and the property is in George. My mom was staying there, but he is a bullying scumbucket, is agressive and has a violent temper (and owns three guns) - so she has moved back to Cape Town/Paarl. We don't have easy means of getting to George (we don't have money, my mom owns only this house and is a pensioner; I'm a struggling freelancer). Can one do these things from distance?

So I don't know how the cops will respond to someone calling from Cape Town to act on a squatter in George.

So what exactly is the situation? Did he move in and through his behaviour force your mom to move out? Just remember, this is her property and I presume it is in her name? If you want him out, you can call the cops in George and lay a complaint. Go to your nearest police station and explain the situation...try and speak to a senior officer if at all possible. Be sure to mention that he is violent and owns 3 guns...that will make them sit up an listen AND also they will be FORCED to investigate. Hopefully he becomes aggressive towards them when they arrive and that will solve ALL your problems. Tell the police that you want him off your property and they need to assist. Also tell them he has tampered with state owned electricity meter and see if you can get his power cut off and thus make his life miserable. You will be amazed how the police LOVE to sink their teeth into a case like this. BUT try and speak to a senior officer and get his/her name and phone number. Believe me...cops actually do want to help.

My mom's the registered owner, but we are not in George. The property is in George. He has been living there for 2+ years, as he would in any case have inherited the house. Then my mom moved in there Jan 2010. But he was making no contributions - no rent, no rates and tax, no water, and then stealing electricity. While my mom is regfistered owner after my dad's death a few years ago, my brother believes that the house belong to him because of Islamic laws of inheritance. He simply refuses to listen to reason and has now been threatening my mom that he'll burn down the house if she tries to sell it (she needs the money) and that he'll "come and kill me in Cape Town" if we start a legal process.

He is really bezerk and I am terrified. He has always been a bully, agressive, violent temper ( I haven't seen him physically for years; avoid him basically), but I think it is past the time of thinking of him as family.

But, since my mom and I are in Cape Town, I am not sure how George police would respond to a call from Cape Town.

I have reported the meter tampering to Eskom's number; just not sure how long it will take or whether they'll respond.

So do you want to get him out or not? If you do, then read my post again and follow the steps explained in it.

Thanks MightyQuinn.

Understand that it's difficult from a distance. My brother is a real ****er and he might well just burn the place down. I don't take his threats lightly. So I am just considering options and planning. If he gets put off the property, for instance, someone has to get the key etc. So I'm not ignoring what you are saying, etc. The prospective estate agent has suggested going straight to an attorney, etc. I'm just looking for other paths before we decide on the very expensive route.

Do you know if the weapons he has are legal? The best way to get rid of him is to get the cops involved. Wait a couple of months with no contact with him at all. Then call cops in George and tipp them off that he may have illegal weapons on the premises. Also tell them he has made threats against you and your family and also say that he stated that he will kill you AND ANYONE THAT COMES ON THE PROPERTY TO SEARCH IT FOR WEAPONS. This may be a little white lie, but it will get the cops out there in a hurry. If he has illegal weapons in the house he will be arrested and charged and eventually he will go to jail, especially if he is violant and tries, hopefully, to resist arrest. When he is out of the picture, take back the house, change te locks and most importantly, get a restraining order against him. If het gets out of jail or comes near you and your family, he will just go straight back, for a long time. Do you not have family to assist you with this?

I have now contacted an attorney in George and have given him all the information about everything. His weapons were legal (he was at one point, I believe, even chair of the George gun club many years ago); whether he has renewed the licenses is another matter.

Family are all wary of him and do not want to deal with him. We're all also struggling with surviving economically, so it's not easy to, for instance, just jump in a car, drive down and sort it out. All attempts at arbitration fail - he will dismiss an Imam's authority if the imam's opinion doesn't go in his favour. A big fukc-up, him and the situation, but thanks for advice and concern.

About white lies and cops - my brother is a motor mechanic and makes friends very quickly and easily. To other people he is very likeable. According to my mom, he's friends with the local cops, so I myself am reluctant to lay a complaint by telling a white lie and then have constables who are his friends 'investigate'.

The electricity, by the way, has been cut. I'll leave it now to the law to take it's course.

Hope you get your family patched up - it's much more important than things.

By the way: Why would a muslim choose a good Italian Catholic alias like Guido Vittorio?

No more patching; protecting my moms.

LOL, I just like messing across sectarian boundaries.
