Unconfirmed reports in Australia say former All Blacks coach John Mitchell is lucky to be alive after being stabbed in his hotel room in South Africa.

Channel 9 is reporting two intruders broke into his room last night and one of them stabbed the 46 year old during a struggle.

The intruders tied him up and fled.

He is currently being treated in hospital.

Mitchell, 46, is in South Africa as coach of the Lions Currie Cup team in Johannesburg. He is to take up coaching the Lions Super 15 team in the 2011 competition.

Earlier this year he was released from the final year of his contract with the Western Force in Australia.

Mitchell also spent time in England, including a stint as England's assistant coach.

He coached the Chiefs in 2001 and was appointed as All Black coach through to the 2003 World Cup.

It's been confirmed former All Blacks coach John Mitchell has been stabbed in South Africa, where he is coach of the Currie Cup Golden Lions side.

Golden Lions president Kevin de Klerk has told ONE News Mitchell was stabbed in the leg and arm after two intruders broke into an apartment complex in Johannesburg.

There is an electric fence around the complex but ONE News has been told that was disabled for some reason.

Golden Lions conditioning coach Wayne Taylor was in the adjoining apartment and heard the commotion in the room next door.

He climbed out the window and down the drainpipe to alert police.

Mitchell, 46, has been treated in hospital but De Klerk says he will be back at work tomorrow.

The burglars stole a laptop and cellphone.

That is just shocking indeed. Inside job on this one? In a darn hotel!?
This is what south africa is known for, its darn crime.

I would love to know what is the average rate at which people pay for insurance against theft and all the other nasties this country offers.
 
Pathetic security. What kind of hotel is this? They better have a damn good explanation on how these guys got in. CCTV recordings better have caught something...

Good possibility it is an inside job, wouldn't surprise me if the police were involved somehow.
 
Was he stabbed by Africans or was someone from his 'own camp' who did not like him?
