I saved a core 2 duo from the scrapyard about 2 weeks ago. It was the first computer that I saved.
At the moment it is running Peppermint 6, 64 bit quite nicely.

I would like to be able to save more PC's, load Linux on them and give them to people who can't afford a PC. I don't really have time to offer support, but I would like to see useful computers saved from an early grave.

Any suggestions?

Is the education distro Edubuntu still around? Can see this going to some less than fortunate schools or students

At the moment, I would rather load Peppermint Linux - it uses LXDE and is very light on resources. And you can install anything on it you can install on EduBuntu.

Q4OS for pc's that are actually old, like higher end p3's.

I run Linux on them, use them as servers for testing stuff... I have one at home, on 24/7 which is also my FTP box my brother uses to send me.. ahem.. STUFF

Lubuntu will probably be the lightest

Set up some really old machines for a charity and used Lubuntu. It was light enough to run on Pentium 4 systems and the Ubuntu driver support is good, making it less of a hassle than some other options.
