Ok it seems that the results are in on the Uncapped accounts.( I am speaking of the 4mb lines here)

1.) They are mostly fine for email, web surfing and downloading after hours.
2.) Latency local and international is too high(most of the time) for gaming and Voip.

So for the regular use crowd, the guys who only do 1, a simple uncapped account will work.
For people who need the whole spectrum, 1 and 2, perhaps ISP's can make us a combo account.

Something along the lines of providing line rental + resold uncapped account + 1 gig of unshaped data for R900 or to provide a line plus 1 gig of unshaped data for R399. Please ensure this bandwidth rolls over.

I am speaking specifically to Cybersmart, Web Africa, ISAT and the other ISP's who do line management on behalf of Telkom.

This combined with a reasonable top up price of say R30-40 per gig will allow us to use the "bulk" ISP's for the regular use and still provide revenue to the "fast" ISP's for the applications that need it.

What do you guys think?

LOL, the R30 or so bucks they will get for doing very little will be a damn sight better than the R0 they get now.

ISPs go out of their way to offer everything you dont want as far as i can tell

Where does that come from? I have done nothing but put up suggestions to ISP's.

This forum is all about developing the BB market in SA. If it is just about complaining about everything then please tell me to leave.

I haven't been complaining I have been putting forward new ideas. Do you know the difference?

Even if 99% of all internet users are happy with their setup I will continue to put ideas forward to ISP's to satisfy the 1%. This is how new markets develop.

Start your own seeing you come up with so many innovative ideas? :)

People dont like being told how to run their companies, thought you would notice that by now. ;)

My intention is not to tell them how to run their business and if it is coming off as such then I apologize.
I am merely taking the feedback that I read from the forums and formulating a product solution based on the problems I read.

If this is offensive then please feel free not to read the ideas.

Hey Shayd,

I think the issue here is getting the right people together in one room and even then I doubt you'll get the result you want.
The 'larger businesses', who are able to offer uncapped at that price, are not the companies known for being reactive to the needs of what they would class as 'neiche'. It's why 'neiche' companies exist in the first place. Also, I believe that their veiw would likely be that this is a lot of work for what would be considered an 'interim measure' - i.e. until the networks reach the 20th century and shaping is a thing of the past.

If they believe it, accept it or not it has to be the way to go. Unshaped/Shaped should be words never used and is an archaic thought and a result of profiteering by those with their hands around the neck of this country. Those who control the customer access to the internet and those who are starting to lose their grips on the access to the international and local networks. Bandwidth and solid infrastructure can only be the prmary concern for these people because it's highly unlikely that the uncapped market, good or not, is going to disappear.

Having said all of that, I know that although we have connections runing in to our office from IS, Telkom, MTN, etc etc... we are not even able to 'mix' two IS accounts together like this. Therefore, we couldn't offer a blend of uncapped and quality without supplying two logins...

It might be possible to set up a control panel where the user can decide on their line quality - if we resell the management service 'per GB' that Afrihost (and I assume MyISP) are currently using for their uncapped. They have the capablility to change the line speed and shaping and unshaped (from memory) is an option they can chose... but then again this all comes down to price. Unless you are pushing over 50TB of data through this system we couldn't even buy it for R40 per GB at peak times... therefore we'd have to rely on the 60-70% usage rule to allow the sale price you're looking for but then you'd want roll-over.

Lots of bits in one there but do you see the problems?

Run two separate accounts or make do until it 'comes right'.. both solutions make me mad as well. However, I can't see that we have too much of a choice here.

Thanks Peter this gives a good perspective to the limitations imposed on ISP's. It would be nice to have one account that you can click on your ISP's website and click on "turbo" to improve pings for gaming. The two accounts thing looks like the only route for now.

Uncapped is still very much in it's infancy and there seem to be many problems that need to be resolved, I have no doubt that they will.

LOL, Looks like cybersmart released a 1 gig plus 4096k line for R399... looks like my wish was granted.

1 GB ? ^_^ I thought the uncapped hype brought along with it end to things like "1GB" ? Oh well, got what you asked for I guess

Hey there Shayd,

My post wasn't personal and I wasn't offended. I was just saying, the chances of ISP's following one person on the forum's ideas is rather slim. You can keep posting them, but expect some negative comments and don't take them personal. :)
