Hi,

i recently purchased a new amd 5000+ pc...comes with 512mb ram etc
my question is what else do i require to play the newish games like crysis etc ? i know i need to get bigger ram but what else ?? or will the games play just fine if i just upgrade the ram...thanks in advance for your replies

Damn who would sell you a pc with 512 meg ram these days? you need 2gb memory and what vga card you running because to run crysis well you need atleast a nvidia 9600gt :) or ati 3870 :).

i dont have a graphics card as yet...what should i get? i dont need a top of the range one ...just something to play newish games like crysis and fifa 08...the rest of the games are older for eg nfs carbon and pro street etc ...

bought from matrix

i bought it from matrix :o ...

Why did you get a PC with only 512 ram? I use more than that on idle. Can you list your other components, especially the power supply unit and the motherboard? Your processor will be fine but I'm worried that you got a bad deal on the rest of the hardware so you might need to spend quite a bit to get it up to scratch. Also what size monitor do you have?

If you want to play Crysis then you need a top of the range graphics card, no question. Unless you want it to look like Far Cry. 8800GT/3870 is a minimum requirement. If you want a gaming PC then you kind of need to start from scratch, it's no good trying to wrangle gaming performance out of an office PC, which it sounds like you have.

Yes definitely more RAM and a graphics card...

What's your budget for a graphics card? A 9600gt will run Crysis but not very well. An ATI 4850 will run Crysis quite well and a 4870 will run it really well

I think the people at matrix must think windows xp can run smoothly with 512 meg ram lol, so not the case :), problem with the 4870 charlie is the price has gone through the roof with the rand being so weak.

512 MB ram? lol that is madness....Unless it was a budget PC you bought, no respectable establishment should be selling a PC with 512 mb RAM now days...As everyone has already said you will need at least 2GB ram, a decent GFX card, O and you will need to see what Power supply you have, you will need a 400 minimum.

wow

ok here's the specs of the top of my head (sorry im not that techie inclined :) ) amd athlone 64 * 2, dual core 5000+ (the mother board is a biostar am2 i think), 512mb of ram, dvd all writer...and azix case with 450w power supply thats it ...will try and get more details from matrix and post on here...oh the monitor is a basic 15" crt ...planning on getting a big lcd in dec or jan ... thanks will take your advise and get a good graphics card ...

If you're getting a big monitor, you'll need a better graphics card. You really can't go wrong with the 4850 or 4870

yeah it is basically an office pc...i just want to play games now and again ...i have crysis and some newish games which i bought second hand so wouldnt want it to go too waste...i dont mind spending a lil more to get it up to scratch ...

Eventhough you say this is basically an office pc that you wanna use "now and then for gaming," you still need some decent hardware for the games you mention. Crisis needs resources...;)

4850 goes for approx R2200+ (may get cheaper cheaper brand names)
4GB RAM around R1000 (depends if your board can support it)
22" Monitor around R2600+ (for a decent one)

Ja, I use Matrix a lot... but I think the 512 MB of RAM is dumb. All new PCs should come with 1 GB minimum. If someone specifically wants only 512 MB they can ask for it.

Yea they did some sneaky cost cutting there. They're usually a pretty reputable shop though.

Ok your 450w PSU should be ok.

You could get a new 9600GT for R1300-ish, or a 3870 for about the same. Both will be ok for your needs. If you want better you'll need to spend over R2000 for new.

Also wait until you put in your new LCD to try gaming IMO, it's hardly worth it on a 15 inch CRT. Especially with a game like Crysis.
