I can't speak for the Res life at UCT but I did my first year at Tuks in res. Without a doubt the best decision I made, many moms are far too scared about sending their precious boys to stay in res because they are terrified of initiation and all the other rumors their book clubs churn out. I think that once you're passed your first month (max) its really not that bad. I also had a double room, my roommate is now one of my best mates and I share a commune with him and 4 other guys I met in res, we're all going into 3rd year.
I say go for it, make friends and do all the stupid res activities you can only regret the ones you chose not to do, but the biggest secret to succeeding at res is balance, learn to balance social and academic and you'll have a jol. Enjoy UCT!
