I want to look at putting up a couple websites for my self and some friends and family members.
The decision I am faced with is where to get the resellers account from. SA hosting providers (e.g. Afrihost) or international (e.g. Host Gator)(Im not fixed on either of these two specific companies, just examples).

What are some of the pros and cons that I should consider?
And which companies offer the best services, as well as customer support?

The pros to hosting locally is that you get to speak to some one when you have an issue and your sites are hosted here in ZA, not abroad.

We offer multiple Windows reseller hosting packages which all include massive amounts of diskspace, unlimited bandwidth - with prices starting from R138 per month.

I recently upgraded to elitehost's local reseller1 package. Their support is absolutely phenomenal :) They have 10GB storage across a maximum of 50 domains - its sufficient for my needs (mostly wordpress and joomla installs) - but I feel it could be more. I've had issues with databases lagging with other hosting options, none so far with elitehost.

EliteHost is an excellent option. And do not go with a Windows reseller account, unless absolutely necessary, as Windows hosting are very insecure. Rather go with Linux-based hosting.

I could not agree more with the avoidance of a windows hosting environment - especially if you're doing a couple of websites for friends and family. It's not worth the hassle... I've always has hassles.

I shall look into it.

I have only heard good things about EliteHost and others such as Hetzner so I cant disagree with you on that statement, how ever the statement about Windows being insecure is far fetched.

Every OS has its issues and its up to the administrator to ensure that these are addressed. If you have setup Windows servers in the past and had them compromised then perhaps its not the OS thats at fault but your setup and configuration of the OS.

Yeah, Windows servers have MUCH more issues than Linux-based servers. Linux-based servers are also far more stable than Windows-based servers. Why do you think the banks are switching over to Linux for their servers?

Do yourself a favour and get to know Linux, you won't look back ;)

Do you really need a reseller account? Many hosting providers allow more than one domain on one single hosting account. That may work out cheaper.

- How would the customers be able to login to their control panel to manage their individual web hosting account? They may be friends / family but they still need a means to manage their account effectively.
- The main account will not be as secure as one can hope with all the scripts being hosted from it.

International Pros (Hostgator):

* Ten times cheaper than SA on all packages they offer
* More bandwidth and storage than any SA host can offer (I had one website on a shared hosting package. Only after 4TB of bandwidth per month did they ask me to upgrade to dedicated)
* Better support than any SA host - 24 hours a day - live support staff - Email, Live Chat, Phone, forums
* Better security on servers than most SA companies offer
* Reliable up time on all their servers

... and I can go on if you need more reasons.

I currently measure any SA host against what I used to get from Hostgator. If any host can offer me a minimum of 1TB diskspace and 4TB bandwidth at R100 per month - then I will look at the company and how long they have been in the game.

Currently I still cannot find any SA host offering this.

This is very much like a "which one is better ASP or PHP" type of debate/conversation. Each have their pro's and each have their con's. I've been working on Windows servers for quite a while and I can tell you that if they are setup incorrectly - then yes, there will be a lot of issues. But the same goes with every other platform! We run predominantly Windows Server on our infrastructure (and have been for a while now) and we haven't had issues.

Anyway I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in there. Take a look at our Reseller plans too!

I have tried various hosting companies, I am now with Hostgator on their basic reseller package, they provide great support and it really works out much cheaper then any local hosts that I am aware of.

The moment your website generates any kind of traffic, hostgator could shut you down, even if it's 1 website doing the "infringement", the rest will suffer.

Not saying you'll have high traffic. But still. Go with a host that will at least warn you prior to make new arrangements instead of just shutting you down.

Yes don't host with hostgator, I've had a personal site their once and was not very satisfied, their support is good though and never let me down. Only the load of my site I had issues with.. There are plenty of SA web hosts that could satisfy your needs for a low price.
