My little nephew has caught on to the fact that it's necessary for me to phone Multichoice everytime he enters the parental control PIN incorrectly 3 times and has started to consistently do so in order to spite me (yes, he is a little *%&@.) I will of course retaliate by either tickling him to death, drowning him, or just taking the decoder away (which would kind of suck since I also wanna watch stuff).

Anyway, is there any other way to reset the parental control PIN to its default WITHOUT having to endure Multichoice's retarded IVR everytime?

You should just take the batteries out of the remote :p or keep the remote with you at all times :D

If there is, I give it a day before your little nephew finds out about it...:D

Done that already, he just brought along a spare one from home :D

It's turned into a little game of one-upmanship now. He's only 9 but his ingenuity can be quite amusing. Admittedly, I can't wait to see what he comes up with next :P

LOL, I wouldn't be surprised. Luckily he isn't very Internet-savvy (yet), I was hoping there is an option on the dstv.co.za website maybe but sadly cannot seem to find anything :/

When you leave, just change a few settings on the decoder installation bit so it appears to be broken. When you get home, just change the settings back. Although he sounds like the kinda kid who'd call up Multichoice himself and have a techie sent out to perform a reinstallation at your expense. May I suggest you start grooming him for law school...

I had a similar problem a while ago. The only alternative to phoning them is to send an e-mail - but it will take a couple of days to be reset in that case. You can not do it via the website.

Why don't you remove the smart card when you are not there?

We have dual view with the kids' TV in a separate room. It's not that he does it when there's no one around. He'd wait until just before his parents arrive to pick him up and then the rest of us only notice when we switch to a program with an age restriction some time later. I guess I'll just lock the door or take away the remote extender or something so he'll be forced to watch boring Disney channel the whole time

I found this though:

https://care.dstv.com/main.aspx?ID=1708

And apparently "parental control PIN blocked" = error code E42, so that "To clear onscreen errors, SMS Error Code + Smartcard Number to 32472" might just work. If/when it happens again I'll try and report back :)

K, well, curiosity got the better of me so I tried the SMS route (without the quotes and the actual smartcard number, obviously), sending:

- "E42 4011******" (didn't work)
- "E424011******" (didn't work)
- "E42 + 4011******" (didn't work)

In all cases though, I got an SMS back telling me:

"We are unable to process your request. Pls SMS onscreen error code followed by your smartcard number"

Which sounds exactly like what I did.

I also found that if you login at http://care.dstv.com (and not http://www.multichoice.co.za or http://www.dstv.co.za or anything else, very confusing) and then go to MY ACCOUNT at the top menu, there is an option "Clear error codes" with E42 conveniently listed right there. However, when I select it and click "Reset device", I get:

"Specified argument was out of the range of valid values. Parameter name: Key not found for item 'E - 42 (Parental lock-Dig)"

So it sounds like I'm on more or less the right track, but it also sounds like they need to fire their web developer. What a mess! I also tried to register for their forums, got the activation mail, activated my account (which was "successful") but now am unable to login with the username/password that I chose.

I have now made it my personal mission in life to try and get them to fix their website. Wish me luck.

What about telling him you'll break his fingers next time he touches it? ;)

I would rather go with drowning, as per my OP. Less evidence that way, plus he won't be able to run screaming to his dad who is twice my size. I am such a wimp! :p

Betta make sure this is your only "mission in life" cause it'll take your lifetime (I hope you young) and more to get Multi Choice to budge on anything............

I have exactly the same experience (not the nephew, just the lousy website that does not allow the reset of the PG PIN) ... anybody managed to resolve these issues (without phoning the care-line)?

I have a nephew about that age. Once they realise that you wont really ever resort to violence all is lost. :D I think you're basically screwed until he discovers girls.

Hi,

I just caused the same problem on my decoder and found solution...

Make sure you log in to your DSTV account online first.
Follow the online procedure from the following link
http://selfservice.dstv.com/self-service/clear-errors/possible-error-codes/e42-parental-control-pin-blocked/
The PIN should go back to factory defaults

Yes by using the used codes *120*68584#
