Resignation, when is the right time.

Hi all, (firstly, please dont criticize my spelling and grammar, way to tired now to think straight and been a long week)

So my girlfriend left overseas today to portugal then to the UK, I am currently waiting for my british passport then going aswell probably in around october. so emotions are all over the place at the moment.

Anyway, recently in June I took sick leave and annual leave for a surgery that took 1 month recovery time, and 2 days before I went for surgery one of our techs resigned so my company promoted me to his position, They also did my annual review and gave me no increase due to "attendance" issues, even though they knew that I was going to have the surgery atleast 12 months in advance and they said I can take minus annual leave if needed but when I get back they penalize me for it. like WTF. but anyway.

Now they have been training me up to do the leaving techs job who will be gone by end of july, but the problem is I really want to leave aswell, I want to join my girlfriend and they have 2 months notice period to work out, so i would essentially need to have my resignation in by 1 August to leave in early October. Feels really *** to leave the company in this kind of position and really honestly not sure what to say to them. I honestly shouldn't really feel bad about it considering what they have done and the issues we have had in the past but I still feel bad about putting a resignation in at such an odd time for them. What would you do? How would you do it?

Best to tell them before they go to the expense of training you.
One thing about companies is that they will drop you in a heartbeat if they start losing money- There is no loyalty from them. It's just a job. If you don't want to stick around, don't.

when would you do it? Closer to the end of the month or tell them now on Monday? also how should I put it to not burn bridges, never really had to resign before. Should I just say that there's a better opportunity on the cards for me and I would like to resign effective August 1? keep it sweet and short? and then obviously the thank them etc and offer to find a replacement if i can.

Yep, right a letter saying you tender your resignation fictive 01 August b thank them for the opportunities they have given you. You could even tell your manager you are not leaving for a competitor but are emigrating.

Rather resign last day of this month. Not first day next month.

you should have mentioned this to your company soon as you knew that you were going. gives them more time to prepare.

Speak to you manager and hand in letter on last working day.

Do it before they train you to keep your conscience clear.

Prepare yourself for the guilt trip and the snide jibes - reality is, it's your life - if you have the opportunity to learn and explore, grab it.

PS: hand in resignation at the end of this month NOT 1 August otherwise you will be there for 3 months instead of 2.

+1. Should have handed it in last month with no reason. Accepted their offer of an increase as they would have interpreted it as you are disappointed that they had not given you one previously. Then given them another resignation end of this month and spent your last three months with them at a better rate.

I told my boss about 15 months before I emigrated that we where planning on emigrating. I didn't officially resign. Just told what the plans where and that as soon we got the visa that I would give the required 1 months notice.

At the time I thought it would be 4 months, but I underestimated the UK Border Agency

Anyway, company was very good about it. They gave me a glowing reference. IT Director even said I could write it and he would sign it. I kept them in the loop all the way.

It depends on your relationship. But try not to be a douche about it. You never know who might need to call up for a job on the future.

Depends on how the company is treating you, in this case I would not have cared enough to give them a heads up.

Thanks for all the help and tips, They decided they are giving me a small bonus, so as I get paid, should hopefully be last day of the month then I am going to put my resignation in. Guess I am going to expect them to be upset and treat me like crap for 2months.

are you resigning because your gf left SA? What if she left because of you?
