Resolution error message when playing older games

I have recently tried to play Swat 3 and Grim Fandago and I get an error message that the games should be played at a resolution greater than 800x600.

I have a nvidia 9500 gt and a 17 inch monitor. I have downloaded the latest drivers, I have even reinstalled the drivers that came with the card, but it still does not work.

Some help and advice will be appreciated.

latest patches (if any) been installed?

I am using xp and the all the patches for the games have been installed. The funny thing is that splinter cell (original) plays although the same message pops up.
