Hi,

Im having this wierd issue... I can ping and connect via MSTSC to a DNS Name e.g. \\testmachine but if I want to browse to it via explorer its wont resolve the name. If I use the IP address it works fine.
I've flushed the DNS added it to the hosts file can anyone suggest something?
It works on all other PCs on the network using the same DNS servers.

"\\computername" is not DNS, it's netBIOS.
"hostname.domain" is DNS.

check that your "netbios over TCPIP" setting is enabled"
goto: network adapter/LAN or wifi adapter/TCPIP(4)/advanced/WINS.

keep in mind:
a) adding (a DNS host name) to the "hosts" file = you're manually changing DNS resolution.
b) adding (a NetBIOS computer name) to the "lmhosts" file = you're manually changing NetBIOS (WINS) name resolution.

add the computer name to "lmhosts.sam" file and then rename it to "lmhosts"
"lmhosts.sam" = a SAMple file.
"lmhosts" = the real mckoy.

to refresh DNS/Netbios cache do "nbtstat -RR".

if you're using Windows 7 (and you're not on a active directory domain) then it's probably disabled.
