Didn't XP come bundled with DOS?I think Windows XP was the best of retro gaming eras.
The reason being, it was just before the modern age of Windows Vista. You could run XP and still be able to run pretty much all classic games without a problem. The only problem you may have is that some of them may run too fast, but then you just use DOSBox.
Windows 98 was cool, and the late 90s were good for games, but I don't think you lose much in terms of compatibility by going to the early 2000s and you gain a lot more hardware power.
I wonder if you could connect an SSD to a Windows XP PC? A Core 2 Duo system running XP connected to an SSD would be decent.

Millennium and below booted DOS and ran Windows under DOS.
Yeah I remember playing games on XP running games in Dos modeNo, it had DOS emulation though. I'm not even sure whether 98 came bundled with DOS. I can't remember which release they started to just include DOS emulation rather than DOS itself.
I know that 95 was based on DOS.
The thing is, if you are running Windows XP, almost all Windows games, even early Windows games, just work. For DOS games, you have DOSBox anyway.
