I would appreciate help on how to restrict a staff member accessing certain websites like Face book and google mail. I have 4 staff members, but do not run of a networkd.

I have a problem with 1 staff who continously is accessing Facebook etc.

I have tried blocking the sites via Restricted sites but it does not seemt to work.

Thanks

if you have access to their PC's and they are technologically challenged...

edit the hosts file : http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/windows-7-hosts-file/

and add the following lines to it at the end :

127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com facebook.com m.facebook.com
127.0.0.1 gmail.com www.gmail.com mail.google.com

and so on...

this will cause any requests to those domains to be routed to the machine itself... which will result in a page not found error.

OpenDNS.

Stick on the Router as primary DNS, apply content filtering or specific website blocking. Works wonders.

Block the IP addresses in your router.

Probably the simplest and cheapest solution for a small company with no firewall/proxy/UTM device.

I would go for multiple solutions.

1) Edit his HOSTS file and block the sites from there.
2) Use the OpenDNS settings in your router or on his PC.
3) Lock down his profile so that he does not have administrator priveleges.
4) Install a keylogger programs so that you can monitor his activity after the fact.

Why are you scared to confront the person head on? Are you paying their salaries, then clear, concise warnings on what is allowed and not allowed. When it happens again, give them their walking papers.

Or to be more precise, you use proper disciplinary procedures... First a verbal warning, then written warnings, then a dismissal.

what router do you have? Netgears are pretty simple to block websites and keywords,
Also as teraside said use open DNS very good if you don't have a netgear.
