Retired IT generalist - with +35 years experience in the IT industry - looking for work.

I was required to retire, and am now bored silly :) so I am looking for contract work.

Skills are reasonably current:

  • Development in C# & Delphi. Knowledge of patterns, TDD etc.
  • CI experience using (mainly) Subversion, NAnt & CruiseControl.
  • Business analyst / systems analyst / DBA.
  • Team manager / project manager / buyer.
  • Experience mainly in healthcare / insurance / assurance industries.
Residence is in Johannesburg, though I have spent a lot of time as a self-employed telecommuter.

Single with both ZA & EU passports, so travel shouldn't be a problem.

Rates negotiable.

If anyone has something / knows of something please PM me so that we can discuss.

If you know C#, TDD and design patterns it should be easy to get a job.

There are sites for freelance work like odesk, elance, freelancer

I have investigated all of the websites that you name. Most of the jobs offered are for fixed price contracts at less than $100 - and for that they want as much as two week's work !

I have also approached most of the local recruitment agencies, but nothing thus far: rarely even a canned 'thank you' note - which even SARS sends :)

I can understand my age being a problem for permanent positions - though the Labour Act doesn't specify a retirement age a company's Provident Fund normally does - hence my seeking contract positions. But unfortunately nada ...

Recruitment agents are really evil people. Dont expect their help, and freelancer.com takes every developer for a cheap ride. You should try contacting places directly via their HR. Like the banks, I really think you stand a chance with them.

Many thanks for the suggestion.

I agree with you re recruitment agents: I come from an era where IT recruitment agents (a) specialised and (b) tried to help both client and recruit. No longer.

Though it's my fault: I should have expected no less than what I have found.

A couple of years back I was involved in interviewing four 'top' pre-vetted candidates for a senior developer position and discovered that only one could tell his a** from his elbow ... :)

^^^ If you only knew Java

I have in fact written code in Java & PHP, but don't feel that my skills in either are what I would expect of a developer :)

That said, based on interviews where I have interviewed others, these days the ability to actually write a program seems to be very low on the candidates list of skills ... :D
