We are based in jhb.
Looking for retirement villages/complexes/estates in the Durban area.
Requirement is for
an elderly widow
Safety
Convenience
Limited budget

Please share
names of places that you may know
Insights/ Opinions based on personal experience
Pros / cons.

Most of the new retirement villages coming up now are like over R1.5 Million and the kicker is ownership can only pass to a spouse and there is none ownership reverts back to the developer

I would never buy something with this ridiculous life rights.
 
Does it need to be an retirement village? Does this person require special care? How about a regular flat?

The current house is a massive double story house. Too big for one person to live in. Security is an issue.
Kids are in different cities. She doesn’t need special care now. She is mobile. Drives around. Active member in the community.

She wants to downscale. We are considering all options.

If you going for a flat consider that aging is ongoing and for example if the lift is out of order then stairs become a challenge for the elderly

Also despite her health being ok now it may deteriorate with time then you have to look at another place that caters for frail care.

Generally places on the south coast are more affordable than those in hillcrest or ballito

All the new retirement homes are these "life rights" villages. I think they are targeted towards the Brits primarily.

The number of retired Brits living in the South Coast is actually shocking. I only really noticed a few years back when I was working in retail.
 
La Domaine in Hillcrest is popular (but pricey). Plenty facilities.

Look around there are retirement places that take the place back so to speak.

But

There are places that pay out to the family 80/90% and in some cases 100% of what the unit originally cost.
At least with those there will be money going back to the family.

I am not in Durban though so cannot advise on places down there
