Returning i-BUTT modem tomorrow morning.

Hey RODENT - sacrifice some time and post your reasons: would help the rest of us understand. You'd be doing a good thing for ZA netizens - thanx in advance...
 
As I would expect, RoDent is not happy about the price offering and as you all are, the CAP that will be implimented. I will ask you all however to be a little patient. The information I have is that there will be other services and the Modem Price (PCMCIA) at R2100 is much less than Sentech's. They expect to get the modem price down to under R1000 in the future. Dealers will not receive a huge margin and as we all know.... Bandwidth cost what it cost here in SA due to the fact that there are only 2 international carriers and getting the pipes here cost a furtune... eg. CIR 64k international costs R8000 + per month.... So I ask you all, how are they supposed to provide us with a WOW service in these regulated conditions. I'll give them a change and see if they will provide the best service possible to the end user.... I do however understand RoDents disappointment and frustration.... Any Comments????
 
Nobody expects unlimited international capacity.

However, it is reasonble to expect unlimited local capacity or at least a much larger local cap e.g. 30 GB.

Lumping local and international usage into one 3 GB cap is disingenious.

I totally agree with Harth. We would all like an uncapped service, but we all know it is just not possible right now. It appears that iBurst have not learned anything from the Telkom ADSL saga. The mere fact that they have chosen a 3GB cap is a slap in their prospective customers face. We've been crying and moaning about the 3GB cap since it's inception and for iburst to go the same path as Telkom is not just shocking but it's plain stupid. For 3GB I would be prepared to pay no more than R300. If they expect me to fork our R600 then I expect not a byte less than a 10GB cap.

Wake up iBurst!

Executive summary:
This 'offering' is useless to me. I use BitKeeper for Linux kernel updates,
I use CVS, I use SSH, I use Subversion. I use OpenVPN on ports that I decide.

So - If you're interested in what is essentially a 64k leased line, then go for it.

Suggested offering:
Same as above, but with international traffic only. Local network access should not be subjected to these silly restrictions, or at least be subjected to a 256kbps limit or some such.

South African ISPs are doing nothing for this country's Internet industry by dreaming up restrictive packages such as this. It's no wonder there isn't a decent open-source community in South Africa, even tho we have the talent.

At least Telkom does their bit. Local access is essentially free, and unrestricted.

Will the 64k after capping be "guarenteed" or "contended"?

There are still too many questions to take this product seriously.

I have no problem with limits of some kind being set - Telkom is robbing even iBurst. But market requires clear definitions on the key issues. By reading these forums (as they admitted doing) they should have been able to already have defined a product in concise language which each and every techie could understand and sell without asking a single additional question.

I was soooo close to getting iBurst until I saw these rantings... I mean what the hell is going on in the heads of these people... WAKE UP iBurst... how are you going to compete with Sentech or Telkom?

Like Rodent said.. atleast with Telkom Local is free and I heard rumours that Sentech are considering the same with Local... man... if this is the path ISP's are going to choose then what freaking difference does it make how many people come on to the market with broadband offerings...

Look at cell phone rates in this country... same thing...

The South Africa consumer is seemingly being screwed everywhere...

cAde - as indicated by everyone when obtaining the units .... iBurst is still in a testing phase ... EXPECT downtime ... the service will only officially go live in March AFAIK
 
Me thinks me stick to Sentech. At least they dont limit to 64k and the soft cap/recommended usage for 128k is 10gig. I have been experiencing flying local speeds. Yes international is not as fast as it could be but it is improving systematically. As with Iburst they also have to buy pipe from tyhe 2 available carriers. Iburst still has to learn the hard way like Sentech did. At least Sentech is at a stage where they are busy fixing their problems. So I am staying with them because Ibusrt still have to make those mistakes and then start fixing them.
 
Well i was gonna go the iburst route when it came out but, yeah that idea has been smashed.

isnt Telkom capping local to 7 gigs from Jan? the rumours iv heard is you will have 10 gigs including your 3GB international. this is just a question.
 
I do agree with the above mentioned comments, I have subscribsed to Iburst but share the same concerns.

However The CAP implemented with Iburst goes beyond bandwidth costs. Each tower can handle a maximum of 20-24Mbit. So it would not take too many users to kill the network. If there is an explosion of subscribtions (as we saw with Sentech) the network won't last long with the current number of towers. I still feel that 3GB is a bit rough. The Australian offering is a 10GB cap for a 1Mbit connection. Which is a little better.

However once WBS rolls out more towers and attracts more users they should ease up on the caps, provided they don't follow too many of Telkoms ideas. However I don't believe that they will ever offer a CAP free service.

The Port Shaping on the other hand is totally disgusting, If they are only going to provide 3GB the least they can do is let us use it the way we want. If not they should not let shaped services count towards the cap. IE if I use a port which is restricted to 64kps it should not count towards my cap. That way I can use P2P at 64kps and still have bandwidth when I want to do my regular surfing or mail downloads.

I think that would be a sure way to attract a huge amount of users without the risk of becoming the next Sentech.
