Has anyone ever lost their iPhone and had it returned back to them? With or without "Find my iPhone"?

I have lost mine many times. Without Find my iPhone I would never have found it in that sofa.

Lost and found as well as stolen and recovered.
Lost on the N1 after William Nichol (stopped to check a tyre noise). When I realised it was gone, used Find My iPhone from my laptop to track it back to the on-ramp and send a message to the phone. Handed the homeless guy who'd found it R300,00 for his trouble as well as for waiting there to meet me. Stolen in an armed robbery, tracked it with my iPad to a shack in Diepsloot and recovered it there.

mine got stolen on Christmas Eve.
I have been trying to trace it with Find your iPhone.
It works squatt if the stolen item is NOT online on the WWW.
What is the freaking point in having such a stupid application if it defeats the WHOLE objective.....

Dropped one climbing down a bank about a year ago, it was in silent mode, luckily managed to track where it had fallen with Find my iPhone from another iPhone we had with us.

Not quite an iPhone story... I had my Blackberry stolen a few years ago at a casino when I left it on a table. After I had realised it was gone, I went to check with security and they had a look at the CCTV footage. We saw the culprit who took it, but by that stage he had already left the premises.

2 days later, my friend got a call from the police asking if someone had lost a Blackberry. Apparently they had been conducting random road blocks and had pulled over a taxi. They searched the occupants of a taxi and became suspicious of a guy who had a very fancy watch and my Blackberry. When they checked the contact list of the phone they saw predominantly white surnames. he said he had many white friends, but they didn't believe him. The cops phoned the last 5 dialled number on the phone, and happened to phone my friend who was with me at the time.

I got my phone back, but the cops forced me to open a case of theft against the culprit before they would return the phone to me.

No tracking software needed - just good ol' police work. :)

By yourself or with the help of police?

With the Diepsloot police... The CIDs from Honeydew who came to the house after the break in also got there about thirty minutes later.

The phone needs to be online in order to track it ..
even if they put another sim in..

as far as I understand with IOs7 you cant factory restore it or even reload the firmware with out the Apple ID and password?

Does this mean that they is no-Way to use a stolen Iphone with ios7 ?

Yip, even if you factory reset the device, you still need to log in with your Apple ID. There are ways around it though, but for the most part, it's not easy.

thats why i love the JB comunity ...

I know there are ways around this to ...but hopefully the run of the mill phone snatcher will not know them ...

I have set up my phone that you cannot turn it off or switch on airplane mode without a fingerprint ....that should get some more milage if i ever loose my phone ....hopfully
