REV A uncapped?

Prime is R999 with voice + 1000 on-net minutes.

They stated voice as being R99 and if you want 1000 free on-net minutes they charge R199. So that is how I got to R799 :D

The only difference between Rev A and Rev 0 is higher upload and maybe lower latency depending on conditions. But why should we pay more for upload, does it really take more of the bandwidth slice, when they say for instance 1mbit international = upload and download. Do we always pay for everything, is New York not also paying for requesting data from us?

Sounds like we will always be at the short end of the stick. In fact Neotel is now sounding a lot like Neotel can't, contradicting their advertisement.

Why? What's wrong with that?

You need to use the R999 Rev0 device as a starting point.

You sound like the type person that wants uncapped internet at R5 a month. Get realistic. If you can't afford to bad. Neither can I. It doesn't mean they must make the service cheaper just for you and I and run in at a loss.

I realise you can't have uncapped for ridiculously low prices and I am by no means saying that we should be paying what they pay overseas for internet access. I could afford the R999, and I think that is a perfectly acceptable price, but unfortunately it isn't available to me yet.

I do however believe that if something doesn't cost you much more to provide than another service, then it shouldn't cost much more for the customer.

For example lets suck some numbers out of thin air and say RevA costs 10% more to implement than Rev0? Why then should I pay 30% more?

I think your logic is flawed in this regard because you seem to be assuming that the implementation cost is the only thing that should effect the monthly price, for a capped service in which you pay a set amount for each bit of data you use this would make sense, but for an uncapped service this cannot be done to accurately calculate costs.

Think about it this way: People are going to use torrets or some or other type of upload intensive application (backup service) with this service which will result in higher data usage from the consumers side. Now add to that the fact that the download speed has increased aswell and you have even more data use.

The cost of implementng the upgrades are min to say the least and thus most of the monthly bill will be based on their calculation of average data use per customer. Now to me it would seem like a really stupid idea for them to simply charge the same on a service in which their costs are likely to increase; wouldn't you say?

I guess I will have to wait until 2009 June for the international cable to land and make things more affordable. Perhaps ADSL will start with a 90GB cap.

I've got to admit that you have a point. As you said this is all based on the idea that they can offer you an average of 1Mb, and that they don't slowly throttle you down to near-dialup speeds like Neotel seems to currently be doing. I suppose for a connection like that it isn't a bad price.

Unfortunately it isn't something I would go for as it really just isn't in my budget. :( I'm still waiting for the pay-rise fairy.

Actually you are right, it is a good package (best in its class that i have seen to date) considering the rate limits don't count during offpeak times.

The Line rental is not R152 per month as you stated above, thats the 384k line rental which would make getting this uncapped service pointless. The line rental you would need is the 1024k one which according to telkom is R413 incl vat. Take that into account and the service is now R2112 and this is a special.

So in my opinion the service i described above would not be that badly priced at R1500.

-No Cap
-1meg download/min 300kbps upload
-no threshholding
-slightly higher local latency
-on par international latency (the uncapped adsl service we are comparing to is express which uses satellite for international traffic)

so all in all a fair price if you ask me.

:p Hahahaha - and the joke is on you guys! Has anyone noticed how this offer from Openweb just suddenly disappeared in the past couple of weeks? I guess it was a package just too good to be true ... go figure!

Actually that was a limited time offer. It only existed until the end of that month. Some sort of special they were offering.

Check out post #12...here is the quote:

Anyway at least it is something to think about. Did you see the prices of their usual offerings (outside of the special)...yikes!!

birdy at neotel just told me that 15gb would cost 799, 10 gb 599 ('Prices are not official')

why the more expensive 15GB? We dn't have a phone and no more free minutes anymore.

Currently 10gb is 699 and 15gb 699 which doesn't make sense. Why would only the 15gb cost more. I hope your birdy is wrong.

I have my own opinion ---- Now I can understand why prices will never drop in South Africa, consumers support their prices....
I just hope once the new undersea cable comes online prices will drop.

I would rather get a 4 meg dsl - get an openweb account, and never disconnect for the duration of the month and you can download as much as you like. I heard some guys have downloaded around 500 gigs in a month or more...

with 3 gig international accounts.
