Review: SAOL vs TELKOM vs OPENWEB

nothing like a bit of feedback regarding having accounts with different ISP's...

Since November I was with SAOL on their 10GB. Great speeds initially and never any hassles with accounts. Then I got their 30GB account which I only found out afterwards was an IPC account (not an All You Can Eat type account) which I got on 1 Jan 2006. Ended up being a nightmare, no support over new year, they didn't give me my new IPC login so i was offline for a few days. Seriously bad taste in my mouth.

Then I decided to cash in on the Telkom "softcap" ISP which I think alot of us milked every last drop till "our service threshold" was reached. It took me literally 10 minutes to sign up on the phone and I was given a username and password. No problems. Great speeds. That was basically an account I would be using to substitute for the SAOL 10GB. I needed to find an alternative. I then looked into the Openweb Openbrowse account....

Well what can I say, MrBeep has a large presence here. Something I noticed long before I signed up with Openweb. Getting back to the account I signed up with..it was the 2GB-192K-Openbrowse account (with the all important 30GB local included). All I can say is that it's been great. Service is up and down sometimes, a tweak with proxy settings here and there but overall something I recommend to everyone. Even better if you can use those 30GB local. Even browsing internationally is fast. Wouldn't even notice the 192K part of the account....:D
 
Great... anyone investigated some kind of load sharing between normal ADSL dialup and OpenWeb proxy? Im using a MiktoTik router with 2x ADSL dialups ; National / International. Would like to investigate load sharing on my International traffic though...
 
I have also noticed a huge drop in speeds. Last yr december on my IS uncapped account I was getting a constant 60k on most dl'ds(torrents incl). In January and begining of february constant 50k... now im getting a max of 33k
 
Is openweb 2G + Telkom 3G is the ideal combination ?
How to work with this combination is order to have international for the whole month ?
 
While still in the first 2GB of the openweb account however you do pretty much anything. Only after the 2GB are you then restricted. Also bare in mind local counts towards the 2GB initially.

The openweb account is international the whole month (surfing, email etc) as long as you stay within your 30GB limit. there is no need for a combination account. unless you are going to be using P2P then you will need to purchase a 5GB/10GB and stretch that over the month. it all depends on what you do. If you are using P2P then you go mental locally for P2P and downloads and surfing etc.

I have an IS RAW 2GB 192K account with Openweb and OpenBROWSE.

It works very nicely for me, as I do local torrents with my 'server', and then I put in the proxy settings for all of the other PCs at my house into IE for browsing.

Last month, during Feb, I did over 128GB of local torrent traffic. Way over the 25GB limit that IS actually imposes. Most of it was done after hours as to not hurt the IS-SAIX peering link!!!!

It IS true that sometimes the proxy gives me a few 'issues' in IE, but it has gotten a LOT better over the past couple of weeks. I think that I am still on the old proxy, but am waiting to move over to the new one...

OpenWeb is the BOMB !!!!!!!!!
 
Excuse my ignorance here, but I am keen on signing up for the Openweb / IS 2GB account for R189pm and just wanted to ask the following:

I want to d/l fom the IS newsgroups, but also surf the web, gmail, etc. If I start hitting the newsgroups from day 1, does all that traffic count towards the @GB cap? And then what happens? Will I not be able to surf internationally after that?

I'm sure the answer is in the forums somewhere, I just get a bit confused with all the options & terminology!

About SAOL.

I had a 10GB account from them for a short while. Was quite happy except that some pages did not render correctly. I thought it was a CSS bug in my browser except that the same browser works fine at work. I have switched to a TelkomInternet account and those rendering problems have disappeared. I cannot comment on fault but I did not notice this problem on my old Pre-Nov 1st 10GB Axxess account either.

Indeed, all traffic counts towards the cap which kinda sucks. If u hit it hard enough u'll be capped internationally after like a day which is not great.

But i am with IS and the after-cap international browsing is not too bad. Sometimes a bit slower than dialup but generally around that speed. For the record i am with cheetah so i cannot comment on the whole openbrowse thing but i hear that its praiseworthy.

One thing to bear in mind is that the 30gig local is actually uncapped ATM, which is quite a bonus.
 
What's everyones opinion on AYCE 30GB? Worth it?

Also, does anyone know whether it is 30GB of international traffic or local or what?:confused:

Well its the cheapest 30 gigs available to us poor south africans ATM, so ya, it cant be too bad.
 
I don't think you should be using the word cheap. I am not sure affordable is correct either.

So....for lots and lots of p2p and occasional VOIP (maybe 4 calls p/month) would you guys recommend AYCE?

I'm not sure if you can, but i'm considering using NukeCap's PayVPN in conjunction with my AYCE account. Hoping I would be sorted then.

indeed. When it comes to dsl in this country NOTHING is even close to being affordable or reasonably priced.

But apparently this is the best 30 gigs on offer ATM :-P

hey guys

with the OpenWeb 192k-nocap account, will i be able to use use other browsers (eg. opera, firefox) and will i be able to use P2p applications ie kazza and limewire at full speeds .
 
I assume if your browser supports proxy settings it wouldn't matter which browser you use.

And assuming your talking about "2GB/3GB etc-192K Openbrowse-30GB local" packages, P2P apps you won't be able to download international after your first 2GB/3Gb etc usage but you will be able to locally, up to your allocated 30GB local. The speeds locally for P2P should be as fast as your DSL connection allows.
