I'm looking for some info and general comments about getting my RHCE certification.
Looking at this I have 3 courses to do before I can RHCE. Can this be done in a year and if it is is is realistic/ best practice to do it that quick. As I know some other courses you have to have some xx months practical before doing final exams ect.

Is there other institutions you would recommend I have a look at as I was looking either at Obsidian or Torque-IT.
My company will only pay for 1 out of the 3 so I need to pay for the rest.
How difficult did you find the course?

Thx in advance lads.

How much Linux experience do you have already ? and how much of that experience do you have with RedHat / Fedora or CentOS ?

I myself did it very quick but before I did the course and exams I had 16 years experience with Linux and Unix already behind me.

For an RHCE you need experience and lots of it.

It is worth getting an RHCE certification behind you though, when I hire staff, and I see 2 candidates before me 1st with RHCE and 2nd with MCSE even if the job I advertised for was a Microsoft position I would still not hire the MCSE candidate and rather take the RHCE person, for the simple reason the RHCE person knows how to problem solve and has proven it.

I hope this isn't too late but I totally agree with @warwickw. The experience factor just cannot be ignored!
I would suggest doing your RHCT first and get a couple of months experience on it before attempting the RHCE. Though the RHCE is not the toughest course you must be comfortable with the basics before attempting it else nothing will make sense and troubleshooting will be daunting.

Whatever you decide good luck!

P.S. Obsidian is a better bet than TorqueIT. From my experience TorqueIT staff only know what is in the book, any in depth questioning usually leaves most of them with a blank stare on their faces :wtf:

Personally our company will not look at someone with a RHCE certification. If you want to get certified in linux opt for the Linux Professional Institute Certification (LPIC) program.

Any specific reason for this?

Yeah, cos filling out a multiple-choice questionnaire gets you far in the real world.
