Rhino CAD and CNC Machining

Hey all

A question - I have just purchased and received my CNC machine from overseas. It is 1200x1200 industrial type. I can do Plastics to Aluminium and copper, brass mild steel etc.

Now the actual question is:
What are guys charging per hour for CAD work and then for the actual machining that is required? How do yuor calculate the rates?

No Idea but design a random component, take it to a machine shop and ask them to quote... then use their pricing as a rough guideline.

hey doobyscoo - great idea!! I'll try that and see what they come up with because I would know how long it took to put together in CAD and carve LOL

What CNC machine is this?(if I might ask, also looking for one @home)
 
If it's a 2D machine, then you can look at +/-R200-R250 for cad work and if it's 3D and more complex then +/-
R350-R400. What tipe of CAD software are you using?

I use Rhino 4 for the CAD work and the other software is Artcam and Aspire 3.5
 
That's a nice machine! So mostly 2D then, try work out the thickness of the material x time of completed product x consumables x Watt/h for just cutting and then an hourly rate for the CAD..as mentioned above.
 
Would you be open to some business for your machine...for a price?

Hi Sokum

Mostly 2D yes BUT I also bought the 4th rotary axis for it so I can do "some" 3D work and I raised the gantry by 200mm. It is running a 2.2kw water cooled spindle.

You can see across the bed is the 4th axis rail:

What work did you have in mind? Let's just say that this "small" venture needs to turn over so my wife can start working from home for the kids sake and it obviously needs to make money LOL
 
OH we also have just bought the 3D printer :) which is also up and running!

I am now an agent for the company i got it from BUT as I got it with the mods i.e. Raised Gantry, 4th Axis and the wireless remote control system it was around R80k with all VAT and customes costs included delivered to my door! I can do smaller machines if necessary all built on sturdy industrial bases! The equivalent locally without the mods is around R340k

I am busy working on a website for this but I can still do the necessary if someone wants to order a machine.

Ooooo I have some work that needs doing. I'll be happy to be a test rabbit if you do it for me for free? :p I need some precision cuts made in 6mm or so thick aluminium. It's a small job but I suck at CAD.

hahaha yes I have had many offers, which sadley, i have had to turn most down as it would simply be just way too many "test cases" and no real sustainable "work"

Free i usually have no problem with but tooling would be for your pocket i.e. the reqired end mill etc. It also depends on the job in question if you know what i mean.

I had the same reaction trust me AND a LOT of worry and concern when i paid the money over to them. I heard good things about them so I took a chance and i must say it paid off VERY well. When you throw R80k across the ocean you bite yuor nails especially after convincing the wife that it is all fine!!

But i must say it was WELL worth the gamble and i was a definite test case in SA. Build quality is DAMN awesome and this thing is solid - i cannot move it - weighs over 400kgs. It's built to last! That's another thing - when it gets delivered it is just brought to your door - i arranged a forklift. BUT the shipping guys can arrange for a price to offload.

The customes etc is calculated on R/$ at the time it is loaded on the ship NOT when it gets here. So hopefully the $ is better if you want to order.

I spoke to a couple of people in the design industry and for 3D work in Inventor they are looking at R400 per hour.
Those on AutoCad seem to be a little less but the plus with Inventor is you get a better model.

AH thanks for that Tim. Well i just paid $1995 for Aspire LOL so what's a little more... pfff Let go and check it and and add to my wish list. I currently run at 405/hr but that's in a different field. SO i need to do a couple of things to make it up!
