Rhodes University or Elsewhere...

Reality is nobody cares as long as its from one of the better places. Just had a n interview today where my work-in-progress UNISA BSc is good enough and did not have to apologise for it either.

Also if your a non-white male in the country, any degree will get you the job, including U-KZN.
 
I read my BSc(Hons) in Computer Science at Rhodes and can highly recommend it. I really enjoyed both the tuition and support. With Rhodes being smaller then UCT, the department is much smaller than UCT's which I think leads to a better experience and the quality of the academic staff is excellent - and are very approachable and passionate about their areas of expertise. They also provide a specialised software development degree which is well respected in the industry. I think you will also find more flexibility in how you structure your subject choices at Rhodes.

Especially if you are intending to do any post-grad degrees, I would suggest looking at some of the research areas that each department is currently focused on to see if anything interests you.

Go and visit, see the facilities, and chat to the department manager about your choice between them and UCT.

You made a wrong assumption, UCTs CS dept is top notch. Tutoring is easy to get in the afternoons, the lecturers mostly have an open door policy, the lecturers very approachable. and there is a good tutor:student ratio. I dont get how you can just infer rubbish from an assumption, this is a very bad mistake to do, in general. Have you even spoken to anyone in UCTs CS programmes? I doubt that they had anything to complain about besides the workload.

UCT Stellies Rhodes, you cant go wrong with those IMHO for CS, after all a degree from those institutions is respectable enough.

Use discretion when comparing varsities, as varsity A may have a ****ty dept X vs dept X in varsity B, but varsity A may be better than varsity B overall. I mean saying "UCT is better than NMMU" makes me cringe since i know NMMU has an outstanding architecture dept.

also for OP, there are/was a couple of threads running on varsities and cs. just search around, and do a little research, if you are looking at varsities, chances are that it is a life choice and asking us to help out shouldnt be the only form of research bud. good luck tho :D

My Cape Town ignorance is rift here. Your nic reminds me of that Portuguese guy that was arreseted at a roadblock a few years ago for forged identity documents - he had legally changed his surname to a black one as it helped him win government contracts, the arressting cops where originally not convinced by his story (which turned out to be true)

I think you may be assuming too much?

I actually studied for 4 years at UCT before moving to Rhodes, had many mates doing a computer science stream, and considering my interest in computer science paid reasonable attention to their coursework. If you read my post again you will see that I say 'I think' a smaller class and department was more enjoyable and beneficial. Not once did I say anything about computer science streams in other institutions not being on the same level. In fact I specifically recommend that the OP consider what research areas may interest him between the two.

@Mokusei - send an e-mail to the department manager (Caro) @ [email protected] and I'm sure she will help organise a time for you to chat with her and show you the facilities.

Based on my experience with various employees with bsc comp sci from Rhodes or UCT. I find people from Rhodes or Wits have a higher caliber of understanding. Just my experience.
 
I went to Rhodes, had a great time, got a great degree. Good enough to get me a job overseas without experience (in the UK).
 
I am going to lead you completely astray but consider this anyway. Go straight into the job market and find a job as a junior dev in say Cape town, then, study part time with the university of london or unisa and after 4 years, you will not only have a degree, but you will also have 4 years work experience. I would have done that If I had known any better.

Then after that, travel the world! see stuff do stuff, do a Masters or phd full time.. the posibilities are limitless.

My two cents.
