I went to the local MTN SP store in *Durban on Saturday (22 August 2009) to register my SIM card as per The Regulation of Interception of Communication Act or RICA.

The reasons for this is that I am porting my number from Nashua Mobile to MTN SP on the 1st of September and a don’t want to have a problem with the porting process

The conversation is as follows:

Hi, I like to register my SIM card

Is it prepaid or contract?

Contract

We have a problem with the system with registering contract SIM’s

Why should you have a problem?

Ok, I will try…. Who is your service provider?

Nashua Mobile

No we can’t register, you have to go to Nashua Mobile

But there are no restrictions in the RICA info leaflet

Do you have your Nashua Mobile statement?

No

I need your Nashua Mobile statement to register you

I will bring it when a comeback to register, bye!!!

RICA - conceived by idiots, implemented by idiots and operated by idiots.

No surprise then that the experience is less than satisfactory.

I was RICA'd a few days ago when the courier driver arrived with my upgraded phone.

He was wearing a badge which read "RICA official" :D

The conversation went like this:

"Do you have your ID?"

"Ok, sign here. Write your ID here."

(Me: 'Am I registered now?')

"Yes."

I popped into Chaz cellular with a new PAYG - lady dissapeared behind the counter and 5 min later told me its registered - dialled 100 to activate and it was done.. Maybe its the service provider ?!?

This is not RICA failing, this is RICA registration failing.
We still have to register with our ISP's. Now that's going to be a nightmare.

Clarity

Got a call back from Ramitha Mistri, MTN Sales Operations Supervisor

I was told “contract clients need to go to their own service providers to get RICA registered”.

So in my case I need to go to Nashua Mobile, I can’t register at an MTN SP store.

So it’s off to Nashua I go on Saturday, and get it done. :)

Yeah, that's always been the case with service providers like Nashua and Autopage. You are their client, not a client of MTN Service Provider or Vodacom Service Provider. I made the mistake once before and signed up with Nashua for a CellC contract within days of CellC launching back in whenever. CellC refused to deal with any support queries etc etc...you are a Nashua client, must go to them, full stop. Needless to say that contract was terminated not a day after 730 days...won't make that mistake twice.

I will wait and see what the Rica clowns get up to. If it is anything like the firearm debacle it will not happen. By the way, all firearms on the old system are legal again and there are about 4 million legal arms in SA. What or how are they going to sort out 50+ million sim cards? Off with their heads.

I heard some very upset vodacom customers at a mtn store yesterday, they were most upset that the mtn store could not register them ...

people are stupid :p

No they aren't. Go and check out a RICA leaflet. It clearly states that you can register "at any place that sells SIM cards." Nothing is mentioned about service provider or network.
