I've done this before and managed to fix it but can't remember how.

For some odd reason right click automatically opens up folders etc or tabs in my browser. If an item is highlighted right click automatically opens it. if it's not highlighted I have to click, hold & release the button to get the menu else it also opens.

This is driving me nuts.

Control Panel > Mouse > Button Configuration

EDIT: Bah I read wrong.

Tools > Folder Options> Click items as follows

I had the same annoying problem. In my case, I think it was the mouse itself because when I tried a different mouse the problem went away.

Not the mouse. At one stage I rapidly clicked several buttons and after that the problem appeared.

ponder ... do you mean in the web browser, or the file manager? In either case, which one? Firefox? If so, do you have add-ons like Tab Mix Plus?

Everywhere, filemanager, desktop, Chromium. No.

Oh ... haven't seen that. Are you using GNOME? In system > preferences > mouse do you anything odd like left-handed operation or accessibility features activated?

Seen a few people complaining about it, e.g.

Change the right click behavior from showing the context menu on mouse down to showing the context menu on mouse up (or at least give an option to configure this), because the current behavior is extremely annoying when using a mouse with a very high DPI or when you’ve got very nervous hands.

Something else which is really annoying is the mouse behavior in Ubuntu (I don't know if it's Gnome or X which causes the annoying behavior). I'm talking about doing a click with the right mouse button in Ubuntu. When you press the right mouse button, the context menu is immediately shown and if you hold the right mouse button down, you can select an item of the context menu and then release the right mouse button and the selected menu item will be selected. This is really annoying if you've got a mouse with a very high DPI. It's almost impossible to not move the mouse a little bit when doing a right click. You'll always move the mouse a few micrometers when clicking. A mouse with a very high DPI detects this movement, so the mouse pointer is moved one or two pixels, so the first menu item in the context menu is already selected before you've released the right mouse button, which causes the first menu item to be activated.
The following happens to me several times a day:
- Right click in the tab bar of Firefox > a new tab is created;
- Right click on a link in Firefox > link opens in a new window;
- Right click on the desktop > a new folder is created;
- Right click in Nautilus > a new folder is created;
- Right click on a file > the file is opened;
- Right click on a directory > the directory is opened.

None of the threads I saw had any solution.

Not exactly sure how to do it, but is might be possible to change it so the mouseup event does not register as a click?

Thanks, that is my exact problem down to a tee, was beginning to think I'm the only one. Do you have links to those quotes by any chance, also got a thread on Ubuntu forums so would like to link them for reference.

Thanks!

Last night I heard about Macbuntu and thought I would give it a spin, after I installed it my mouse problems disappeared. Now I'm wondering whether they will come back once I uninstall Macbuntu.
