Rights groups decry Gaza 'honor killing'

A 27-year-old mother of five was bludgeoned to death with an iron chain by her father last week in Gaza in what human rights groups report was an honor killing.

According to police in Gaza, the father, Jawdat al-Najar, heard his daughter Fadia, who had divorced in 2005, speaking on the phone with a man. He believed she was having a relationship with him. Police say al-Najar became enraged and beat her to death; her body was brought to a hospital where officials said she died of a skull fracture.

The woman was beaten to death in the northern Gaza neighborhood of Jebalya on Thursday night. The father called police and confessed to the murder.

According to investigators for the Gaza-based Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, the father and his three sons were taken into police custody. They said the killing "was carried out on grounds related to 'preserving' the honor of the family."

The Palestinian Center for Human Rights, another Gaza-based organization, said hospital forensic reports show the woman's body showed signs of torture and that she suffered a skull fracture from being hit by an iron chain.

Honor killings usually target female victims of rape, women suspected of engaging in premarital sex, and women accused of adultery. They are murdered by relatives because the violation of a woman's chastity is viewed as an affront to the family's honor -- on the woman's part.

Will be interesting to see what happens to this guy! Come on, Gaza, make an example of him! This is your chance to show the world that you guys are citizens of the 21st century.

What about the honor killings at the gay club in Israel by suspected Jewish extremists?

 WTF?

Go start your own thread about it if you feel so strongly that it needs highlighting.
This thread is however about a woman bludgeoned to death by her father because he supposedly heard her talking to a man on the phone

Ummm Israeli police launched a manhunt...... seemed like the right thing to do.

I was pointing out the lack off outrage from Frankie when Jews are killed by their own people.

Last time I checked Gaza's police was taken out by Israel this year, so who is there to report domestic violence too? not so easy when the police are being killed off.

This poor women probably had a history of domestic abuse but the lack of policing in Gaza makes it difficult to control.

hectic.. interesting he calls police and confesses. Kinda weird this happens as they just had like a mass wedding thingie in Gaza the week-end so that couples could still marry even though costs are impossible while the current siege remains in place.

anyway uhm aqua that and the whole eviction condemning by the UN and the US(surprisingly) isn't important here as it potrays Israeli's in a bad light.

The Israeli incident sure is outrageous, and you get those nutters in every society, but this so called honor killing was at the hand of her own flesh and blood FFS.
And although all societies have nutters like the one in the Israeli incident they are thank goodness the exception to the rule, whereas this honor killing is quite prevalent in ........................ , yes you got it, in Islamic countries.
