Hi guys,

Bought a cheap ring light off takealot: https://www.takealot.com/profession...with-2m-tripod-remote-phone-hold/PLID69483464

I need to keep it on for hours at a time and it keeps overheating at the charger point. It didn't come with a charger and actually destroyed one of my phone chargers cause of overheating. I just plug the USB into the charger. Tried a new charger and it does the same thing. Do I need a special charger for this light? Is it a fault with the light?

According to the specs it could dissipate as much as 25W or draw 5A from a 5V charger? None of the other reviews seem to mention this overheating problem. Most high quality chargers should be able to limit the output current to a safe level well below 5A and continue to operate at that level without overheating.
- SMD Power: 25W LED
- Bulbs: 64 pcs LEDs

Have you tried to reduce the brightness to see if that helps? The Chinese light manufacturers usually inflate the power ratings so I think a 5V 3A (15W) charger might be adequate although a 25W charger should be better.

The iStore was selling some Anker 18W chargers for R99 which might be suitable if you can still get one. If you are in Jhb you could try to call the The Glen store to see if there are any left.

Geewiz has this cheap 18W charger but I'm not sure whether it will perform reliably. They also have 30~45W types but they are more expensive. The Ugreen devices are supposed to be high quality chargers.

ohhh that kinda ring

Was wonder where you would put the battery pack …………………….nevermind

Thanks for charger advice. Bought another cheap one off Takealot and same overheating issues. Gonna order a charger off Takealot - if you have any recommendations let me know.

Oh thanks for the recommendations sorry (ignore previous). Might try the UGreen. A bit concerned as had LDNIO 30W charger and the light destroyed that one. The usb plug where it plugs into the charger gets super hot (on both the ring lights I bought). Seems strange, do you think it could have to do with the extension cable?

That light's design is on the limit, with a 5V 25 W design. It should have use 12Volt. I would build a 5Volt supply, with a decent heatsink.

Is there a simpler/more practical solution as I don't have the tools to do this? Just seems weird that they would sell these things en masse without a charger and that they'd have this issue. Maybe most people only use them for brief periods or something. The one light overheats after 20m and cuts out and the other after 45 mins or so. I feel like no matter what charger I get the plug point is going to overheat.

tip 1; do not use the light at max brightness. Tip2: try to see if you can add a piece of Aluminum behind the led to de flex heat , also known as a heatsink. Tip 3: Buy a better quality one , read and write reviews of this product.

Builders Warehouse has a special on a 40W Huawei Supercharger for R199 if that's of any interest. You might be able to get a 15% discount if it's your first online purchase there using the WELCOME15 code. I am not sure how much current it will supply at 5V, you will have to look on the internet. It might only be a maximum of 2A.

Geewiz also have a 3.4A Gizzu dual charger on special for R113 but you can only draw a maximum of 2.4A from each port and the quality will not be nearly as good as a Huawei or Samsung charger.
