I didn't find any threads available for this here so if there are any guys here interested in protecting website registrations from spambots and find that reCAPTCHAs no longer work very well, there is a new solution called ringCAPTCHA.

It's not free, but it uses SMS validation codes to verify human users. You do get $5 when you sign up and I think each SMS costs about 2c.

I'm busy testing it out at the moment on http://myhtpc.co.za/member.php?action=register just to see how effective it is.

You can check out the site here: http://ringcaptcha.com/en/

Not sure how long it will be before this gets cracked by spammers too but you can ensure that the number is only used once which should prevent spammers from setting up automated sms boxes to catch the validation codes.

How do you get around it?

linux + gsm usb modem + at command script + shell script + curl = automated validation.

you can scale the spam by adding more modems... and since USB can be chained... you can run 32 modems simultaneously on one box.

EDIT : and of course the fact that WASPS billing the crap out of you has made people very reluctant about entering their phone number anywhere, especially if you can "win an ipad" ; )

Well, that is fine but that means you can only use it once on a site for each modem as each sim has a unique number. Also in the control panel you can report spam numbers which are then blacklisted, seems like a lot of pt for little reward at the end of the day.

agreed. thanks. nice idea.

If I see a CAPTCHA like that on a website it will be the last time I visit that website.
I'm not going to give out my cell No to just any website.

Uhm dumb question maybe...but how do they circumvent the "normal" captcha's?

There are many ways they do it. From image recognition to hiring people to solve captchas by the thousands. Pick how much you're willing to spend, and there'll be a company that does it.

Disclaimer: I'm a member of Ringcaptcha founding team.

We are currently working on extending and enhancing the product. We do offer several ways to prevent spam and fraud to our clients (as DrJohnZoidberg mentioned). We do also have an IA algorithm to detect several scenarios including the one stated by stricken.

Any suggestions are always welcome.

Should you have any further questions please do post them here, will try to answer as fast as I can.

Regards.

Great, good to know what it's something that is actively being worked on. So far it is really a great tool not only to prevent bots but also for marketers (obviously with end user authorization and opt outs and such).

Nice article, will look in to some of the methods mentioned there. These days I think you need all that's on offer to fend of spam.

i'm using a honeypot + timestamp submission combo on a few sites.
it seems to be working atm.
i hate captcha.
