After a huge amount of back & forth it looks like the planned hyper hatch Golf R400/R420 is no more.

Damn you #dieselgate.

A Golf to out do an Audi RS 3 Sportback and Mercedes-AMG A45, doesn't sound right.

Two doors and no all glass tailgate. Thank everything holy that they killed this infant in it's sleep.

In my book its still "lunacy" as:

A) it is(was) a production *Golf* with +400bhp

B) it had has more power than the RS3 Sportback (wagon) & Audi is higher up the food chain at VAG.

I wanted one... Even told the dealer on a golf R order to put it on his system ... Comment Golf r 400. It would have been awesome if they made it a reality....

Volkswagen Golf R400 project could be revived

When Volkswagen scrapped its 300 kW Golf project, the hot-hatch fraternity was none too pleased. However, it looks as though the super Golf will be given a new lease of life.

Auto Express reports that the German manufacturer will be closing in on its higher powered competitors with a possible 298 kW variant of the Golf 8. But with the next-generation Golf set to go on sale sometime next year, it’s likely that we’ll only see this model by 2020.

“The R brand is going extreme. The role of R is that it can go beyond the rational; nobody needs a compact car with 400bhp, but is there a place for it? Certainly, and that’s the turf of R.” VW’s sales and marketing boss Jürgen Stackmann told the British publication.

There’s no hint as to what powertrain configuration this rumoured Golf hyperhatch will sport but it’s likely to resemble that of the current Golf R’s turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder, dual-clutch and all-wheel drive system.

The 48v system that was recently announced could also play a part here seeing that it’s planned to be implemented throughout the Golf range. This is especially pertinent in light of the fact that the previous R400 concept was scrapped due to the ongoing emissions scandal of 2014.

As far as styling is concerned, it’s believed that the hyper-Golf will be a lot more aggressive-looking than the present crop of performance Golfs. According to Stackmann ” that a little more expressive design, R can go beyond the rational side of things. It can find its place in a different league of pure performance and there’s a space where customers are willing to pay a significant amount of money.”

Volkswagen Golf R400: exec says customers don’t want it

The head of the Volkswagen R division says the high-powered Golf R400 concept didn’t ever make it into production because “customers don’t want it”.

Speaking to Top Gear UK, VW R boss Jost Capito said the Wolfsburg-based firm’s research showed there was no demand for the extreme Golf R, particularly once price had been factored in.

“We did research and customers don’t want it. They want around 300 horsepower [around 220 kW] and a price-tag below €50 000 [about R810 000]. To move up to 400 horsepower [around 300 kW] you lose 50 percent of the sales volume and increase the cost of ownership,” Capito said.

The Golf R400 was expected to go into production back in 2016 after being unveiled in concept form at the Beijing Motor Show in 2014.

The British publication also spoke to Jürgen Stackmann, VW’s member of the board responsible for sales, marketing and after sales, who added the upcoming Golf 8 R would remain the “crown jewel of performance in a Golf”.

“The performance king will remain a Golf R, and the Golf 8 R is going to be fantastic,” Stackmann said.

I like stupid projects like this, they are partly responsible for the original Golf GTi, although the R400 wouldn't sell anywhere near as well as GTi.
